SUNY Canton Accounting Students Volunteer to Prepare Taxes

SUNY Canton Accounting students are volunteering to help low- and moderate-income members of the North Country community prepare their taxes.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) created the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to help individuals and families prepare their taxes. This is the fourth year that SUNY Canton has participated in the program.

“The students have really taken the lead with this program and they want to see it continue its success,” said Peggy Jenkins, Assistant Professor of Accounting. “They will be using their experiences with the VITA program to help prepare for their future careers.”

The qualifying income bracket for participants is a gross income below $45,000, according to the IRS. Students from SUNY Canton serve as VITA volunteers to increase their own tax preparation skills and help community members learn to do their own taxes and help others file theirs in years to come. “Our students are well versed in both customer service and confidentiality,” Jenkins said.

Students will be available to assist with taxes on Tuesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. when the college is in session until April 15 in the SUNY Canton Accounting and Business Lab, Payson Hall Room 203.

Individuals or families who would like assistance must bring all W2 forms, the previous year’s tax returns and all other pertinent documents with them at the time of their appointment. For more information, contact Jenkins at or call the SUNY Canton Business Lab at (315) 379-3880.

SUNY Canton offers a wide variety of career-driven bachelor’s, associate, and certificate programs, as well as three master’s degrees in conjunction with SUNYIT, Utica. Most of SUNY Canton’s new four-year programs are designed so students can take them on-campus, online, or both. SUNY Canton OnLine features more than 100 courses online each semester. The college’s athletic teams belong to the NAIA’s Sunrise Conference, enabling students to compete in their respective sports for four years.
