SUNY Canton Releases Strategic Plan for 2020

SUNY Canton has released its Strategic Plan, “SUNY Canton 2010 – Committed to Student Success,” to continue and guide the College’s remarkable growth and progress for the next 10 years.

There are several goals and key initiatives listed in the plan, including:

  • Plans to expand academic offerings by creating more four-year and master’s degree programs that build upon associate-level offerings to meet the community’s need for career-driven educational options.
  • Initiatives by SUNY Canton OnLine and the College’s International Programs office to establish more distance learning opportunities to reach to more students worldwide.
  • Sustainability efforts to reduce spending on non-renewable energy sources and decrease the College’s overall environmental footprint.
  • Efforts to assure that the campus will become more of a hub of intellectual and social activity for both students and community members.
  • Migration of the SUNY Canton Kangaroos sports teams to the NCAA Division III.

The Strategic Plan was the result of a year-long collaboration between administration, faculty, staff, students, and the larger community, with guidance by a 16-member steering committee, and oversight by President Joseph L. Kennedy. School of Business and Liberal Arts Dean Linda A. Heilman led the planning process. Jondavid S. DeLong, assistant professor and legal studies program director, created the written portions of the plan.

“The SUNY Canton community has engaged in discussions to determine where we want the College to go in the future,” said SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy. “The consensus is that we must keep moving forward and the Strategic Plan is both a starting point and a road map in an ongoing process of change, adaptation, and continuous improvement.”

As part of the Strategic Plan, the College will also continue to physically expand and evolve to meet the changing needs of students. A key addition to campus will be the newly constructed Convocation, Athletic and Recreation Center, nicknamed Roos House, which is scheduled for completion in Spring 2011. The College is also planning to construct a new residence hall to provide more housing options for the increasing population of four-year students.

The College’s mission, developed as part of the plan, is to provide a progression of accessible, affordable, high-quality applied programs that enable students in the North Country, New York State, and beyond to achieve their highest potential both personally and professionally.

The 2010 SUNY Canton Strategic Plan is intended to serve as a campus specific complement to the larger State University of New York Strategic Plan, “The Power of SUNY.”
