Roos Jump to Final Year of NCAA Membership Process

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Management Council has announced that SUNY Canton has been approved to enter its fourth and final year of provisional membership, effective Sept. 1. The decision affirms a June vote by the Division III Membership Committee recommending the College’s advancement toward full membership.

SUNY Canton recently completed its second year of provisional status, and is just one year away from becoming an active NCAA Division III member. Schools typically must go through four years of provisional status before they are recommended for active membership. However, SUNY Canton applied for and was granted a waiver to consolidate year three and year four of the process. SUNY Canton - NCAA Division III “We are honored and ecstatic with the NCAA’s decision to waive our third year of provisional membership allowing us to take this huge step forward,” said SUNY Canton Athletic Director Randy B. Sieminski. “Our coaches, student-athletes, staff, faculty, administration, College Council and numerous departments campus-wide should be credited with their commitment toward making this transition. Their work and dedication is making it possible for us to successfully advance in this process.”

SUNY Canton recently added five new sports in a three-year span to their athletics program offerings. The athletics department has seen tremendous growth during this time, doubling the number of female student-athletes, and increasing its total number of student-athletes from fewer than 150 to nearly 300. The college sponsors intercollegiate teams in men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, women’s volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s ice hockey, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, and men’s and women’s lacrosse.

“This is a tribute to the hard work the SUNY Canton Athletics staff have done to make sure that our programs meet and exceed the expectations of the NCAA”, said President Zvi Szafran. “Our student-athletes consistently demonstrate their outstanding dedication in their sport and their studies.”

Sieminski added the membership process encompasses nearly every area of the college, and the Athletic Department greatly appreciates the efforts of colleagues and professionals campus-wide.

“I’d also like to thank all the outstanding people we work with from the NCAA, especially Director of Division III Louise McCleary, Assistant Director of Academic and Membership Affairs Jean Orr and our NCAA Mentor Joe Walsh from the Great Northeast Athletic Conference,” added Sieminski. “They’ve been extraordinarily helpful and welcoming in guiding us through this process.”

All of SUNY Canton’s athletic programs have competitive schedules against top Division III programs such as nearby St. Lawrence University, Clarkson University, and SUNY Potsdam, as well as Elmira College, SUNYIT, Morrisville State College, SUNY Cobleskill, Nazareth College, RIT, Keuka College, Alfred University, Utica College, Bard College, Johnson State College, Cazenovia College, SUNY Geneseo, Wells College, Lyndon State College and numerous others.
