Kelley Glasgow Named 2015 SUNY Canton Distinguished Citizen

A Canton elementary school counselor who has been an advocate for less-fortunate students has received SUNY Canton’s 2015 Distinguished Citizen Award.

Kelley F. Glasgow was recognized for her leadership in bringing various community resources together to assist students and families who may be struggling financially or emotionally. She created the “Golden Bear Pack” program, which provides take-home meals for approximately 90 students every week. The program is now in its second year and ensures disadvantaged children receive nutritious meals during weekends and holiday breaks.

She has also been instrumental in organizing support groups for those who are experiencing emotional or physical trauma, such as the death of a loved one or physical or emotional abuse.

“Kelley is always there to provide empathy and support to a student who is going through a difficult situation,” said colleague Kathleen M. Willette, a teacher at Canton Central School. “The children find comfort, security and love in her presence.”

Glasgow also works with Canton’s Church and Community Program to organize food and gifts for children and families in need during the holiday season.

“Kelley has extensive knowledge of our community, the agencies that serve our students and the programs that are available to them,” said Kirstin L. Newman, director of guidance at Hugh C. Williams High School. “She is able to make connections for families regularly that help to make their daily lives better.”

Glasgow began her tenure at Banford Elementary School in 1999. She resides in Canton.
