Wednesday, September 23rd, 2015

North Country Savings Bank joins an effort spearheaded by St. Lawrence Federal Credit Union to help North Country residents and SUNY Canton students.

North Country Savings Bank recently donated $7,500 to further the ongoing effort to open a financial literacy center at SUNY Canton. The new program will allow the college to offer no-cost financial education and counseling services in the SUNY Canton Accounting, Business and Finance Center.

“The SUNY Canton financial literacy program is a natural fit to North Country Savings Bank’s mission,” said Terry A. Phalon, North Country Savings Bank President and COO. “As a local mutual savings bank, we are focused on making the communities within which we serve better places to live. Financial literacy is a key component to achieving just that. Our financial contribution, along with generous donations from other community businesses, will help give this important program the launch it deserves.”

“We greatly appreciate North Country Savings Bank’s support for SUNY Canton’s financial literacy center,” said Jondavid S. DeLong, dean of the school of business and liberal arts. “We look forward to working closely with them to shape financial education programs that will best serve the needs of the local community.”

The new funding followed an initial donation by St. Lawrence Federal Credit Union, which helped establish the Financial Literacy Center.

SUNY Canton’s existing Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, its Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and its legal assistance program will play a part in identifying individuals who might benefit from the Center’s financial education services.

SUNY Canton’s ‘It’s On Us’ Campaign Video Attracts 1,000 Views

Wednesday, September 16th, 2015

A new “It’s On Us” video featuring SUNY Canton students, faculty and staff speaking out against sexual assault has received more than 1,000 a views in a week.

The video was made to encourage the college community to take the It’s On Us pledge, which serves as a personal commitment to help keep students safe and a promise to be a part of an initiative to address sexual assault at colleges and universities.

“It’s On Us is a growing movement that inspires everyone to take responsibility to prevent sexual assault,” said SUNY Canton President Zvi Szafran. “Our video illustrates our commitment to maintaining a safe campus for everyone. We all have a role to play in making that happen.”

The 50-second version of the SUNY Canton It’s On Us video can be viewed on YouTube, and a 30-second version has been released to area television stations. More than 30 students, faculty, staff and administration members volunteered to be a part of the project.

Members of the college community will be using the video during an on-campus drive to encourage students to take the It’s On Us pledge Thursday, Sept. 17, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Southworth Library Learning Commons, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. in the Underground Lounge and from 5 to 7 p.m. in Chaney Dining Center.

Amanda D. Rowley, Title IX coordinator and Amanda L. Deckert, Greek affairs coordinator, spearheaded the video, which was filmed on campus by Morgan D. Elliot, the college’s videographer.

SUNY Canton has rallied behind the It’s On Us campaign, which was launched by President Barack Obama in September of 2014. Last year, Szafran inspired an “It’s On Us” selfie challenge to increase awareness about sexual assault and violence on social media.

Accreditors Seek Public Feedback on SUNY Canton’s Nursing Program

Tuesday, September 1st, 2015

The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) will be holding a public forum seeking feedback about SUNY Canton’s two-year Nursing program from 3 to 4 p.m. Sept. 30 in Cook Hall Room 121.

The college’s signature career-driven associate degree program is undergoing a site review for continuing accreditation. During this review, the accreditors wish to hear comments and suggestions from the public to help measure the program’s effectiveness.

The goal of accreditation is to ensure that the education provided by SUNY Canton meets acceptable levels of quality as a premiere educational institution. Members of the college’s faculty, staff and administration use accreditation as another way to measure the success of programs and evaluate the quality of each career-driven major.

Nursing students

The Nursing program was established in 1966 and is noted for providing a highly respected nursing workforce for area hospitals. The site review this year comes following the last accreditation visit in 2008. The program has been continuously accredited since 1968.

The four-year online Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program offered a similar public feedback forum approximately two years ago when it became eligible for accreditation. The program earned five-year accreditation following the ACEN review.

Written comments are welcome and should be submitted by Sept. 22 to Marsal P. Stoll, Chief Executive Officer, Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, 3343 Peachtree Road NE, Suite 850, Atlanta, GA 30326, or by email, mstoll@acenursing.org.
