SUNY Canton Offers Solar Energy Workshops in Watertown
SUNY Canton is working with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority’s (NYSERDA) NY-Sun Initiative to provide solar training sessions in Watertown.
Solar photovoltaic energy collection is gaining widespread appeal as a way for consumers to lower their energy costs. The technology behind solar collection can require new training for engineers, architects and technicians. SUNY Canton offers training opportunities for those working with, or planning to work with, solar energy collection systems through its Career Ready Education and Success Training (CREST) Center for Workforce Development.
Upcoming training sessions include:
- A solar photovoltaic permitting and inspection methods workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28, at the Cornell Cooperative Extension, 203 North Hamilton Street, Watertown. The program is designed for electrical and building code officials and third-party contract inspectors and will provide in-depth training on the equipment commonly found in solar photovoltaic systems. It will prepare participants to develop permit and inspection checklists and review equipment installation schematics. Attendants will earn six in-service credits through the New York State Division of Building Standards and Codes.
- A solar photovoltaics for engineers and architects workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9, also at the Cornell Cooperative Extension. The session will detail the structural and engineering considerations involved with installing rooftop solar photovoltaic systems. Participants will learn how to utilize local electrical and building codes in the design and installation of new solar electric systems. Attendants will earn six learning units for the American Institute of Architects or six professional development hours for professional engineers. Continuing education units will also be available for completing the course.
Each workshop costs $17.87 to attend and individuals can register through https://training.ny-sun.ny.gov. For more information about the workshops, contact Arthur S. Garno, director of the SUNY Canton CREST Center for Workforce Development by phone, (315) 386-7197, or email, email@example.com.
