“We were delighted to receive this special tool for training our students,” said Nursing Professor Debra M. Backus, who noted that similar units cost approximately $10,000. “It’s the only bed in the lab that has an exit monitoring system that will alert staff if the patient moves.”

Gouverneur Hospital CEO Marlinda L. LaValley added, “This is mutually beneficial and we’re delighted to be able to support workforce development in our region, particularly of the nursing workforce.”

The bed is already being used as a resting place for one of the college’s practice mannequins, used to simulate hospital care scenarios. While the college’s plastic patients won’t fully appreciate the capabilities of the bed, the advanced features help students become more adept with the tools and resources available at the healthcare facilities where they will work after graduation.

Other features that will assist students include an integrated bed scale, sophisticated steering for moving the patient and a one-button dining chair position.
