SeaComm Federal Credit Union Creates Scholarship at SUNY Canton
One of the area’s prominent non-profit organizations has created a new scholarship designed to promote financial literacy at SUNY Canton.
SeaComm Federal Credit Union recently made a pledge of $25,000 with an initial gift of $5,000 to the SUNY Canton College Foundation and will be continuing to make donations for the next four years to create an endowed scholarship. The award will be given to a deserving student from St. Lawrence, Franklin or Clinton County who excels in their coursework and who demonstrates leadership among their peers.
“Higher education plays a critical role in not only helping to shape the minds of our neighbors, but also as a significant economic driver in the North Country,” said SeaComm President and CEO Scott A. Wilson. “SeaComm is committed to SUNY Canton’s mission and the essential work they provide in developing educated talent that we as an employer depend on to fill our human resource need. This perpetual SeaComm Financial Literacy Scholarship in partnership with SUNY Canton will ensure that resource is available for many years to come.”
The SeaComm Financial Literacy Scholarship is designed for a student who is majoring or minoring in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or Management.
“I’d like to thank SeaComm for making this contribution and continuing our ongoing partnership,” said SUNY Canton President Zvi Szafran. “In addition to providing this scholarship, SeaComm has hosted internships for our students and has hired our alumni. The synergy between SeaComm and SUNY Canton has been fantastic, and I hope that our collaborative relationship continues for many years to come.”
Among other criteria, the scholarship will be given to a student who demonstrates his or her ability to balance college academics with community outreach, by sharing the financial knowledge learned in classes with the greater college and local community. This may be done through participation in the college’s newly created Financial Literacy Center, or a similar endeavor.
In 1963, ten visionary employees of Chevrolet Aluminum Foundry of GM Corporation in Massena invested $5 each to obtain a share in a newly formed organization that we know today as SeaComm Federal Credit Union. Today, SeaComm serves over 41,000 members with assets of $498 million and is open to anyone who lives, works or attends school anywhere in St. Lawrence, Franklin or Clinton counties.
