SUNY Canton SBDC Invites Businesses to Buy Local Matchmaker Event

Wednesday, October 26th, 2016

rp_sbdc_logo.jpgPurchasing officers from large businesses, industries, government agencies and prime contractors in St. Lawrence County are invited to see what the area’s small businesses have to offer at the 2016 Buy Local Matchmaker event.

Buy Local Matchmaker will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Nov. 16, In SUNY Canton’s Richard W. Miller Campus Center Room 212. It will be the third time the SUNY Canton Small Business Development Center has hosted a matchmaker event in St. Lawrence County. Previous events have resulted in numerous connections between local small businesses and purchasing agencies.

Matchmaking is like ‘speed-dating.’ Businesses sign up for 10-minute meetings with purchasing officers and have that short time to network and share marketing materials. When time is up, the business moves to the next agency. The hope is that agencies will learn about what is available locally, and a potential match can be made between supplier and purchaser.

Buy Local Matchmaker is co-hosted by the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce with generous sponsorship from Alcoa.

“In speaking with some of the larger businesses around the county, we realized that they are purchasing from neighboring cities or online – mostly because they don’t know what is available locally,” said Brooke Rouse, Executive Director of the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce. “We certainly have a tremendous amount of skilled, hard-working businesses right here. This event shines a light on that and creates personal relationships, which is how we like to do business in St. Lawrence County.”

Registration for the Buy Local Matchmaker is free for purchasing officers, but pre-registration is required.

“To attract a wide variety of local vendors it is necessary to have a full slate of purchasing officers committed to attend,” explained SBDC Business Advisor Michelle Collins. “Signing up early not only assures you will get one of the limited slots for purchasing agents, but will also help to attract a good selection of local small businesses for the best possible outcome for purchasers.”

For more information about the event, call the SBDC at (315) 386-7312, email sbdc@canton.edu, or visit www.canton.edu/sbdc.

Artist and Architect Jay Waronker Exhibits at SUNY Canton, Oct. 17

Tuesday, October 11th, 2016

Jay WaronkerWatercolorist and architect Jay A. Waronker will be displaying his vibrant depictions of synagogues in sub-Saharan Africa during an upcoming exhibit at SUNY Canton.

A reception with the artist will be held at 6 p.m., Monday, Oct. 17 in the college’s Southworth Library Learning Commons. The event is free and open to the public.

Waronker, who is a professor of architecture at Kennesaw State University, Ga., has created a portfolio of work by documenting dozens of functioning or former synagogues in Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda, Namibia, Mauritius,  Eritrea, Zambia, Kenya, Ethiopia, Mozambique, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. He uses loose freehand drawing and watercolor techniques to create accurate architectural renderings of the historic locations.

“It may come as a surprise that there are countless active yet relatively unknown, or even unaccounted for, Jewish communities scattered around the globe in places away from the more commonly-associated and mainstream population centers,” Waronker said. “To people who often link Jewish life with certain identifiable places, these less familiar or even unknown enclaves may on the surface seem extraordinary and exotic, but in fact they represent places where Jews simply and freely settled and, in the diasporic tradition, organized and built synagogues.”

Synagogue in Africa

Waronker received his education at Cornell, Harvard, and the University of Michigan.  In 1990, he began the documentation and study of India’s forty synagogues, which led to various publications of his work.  Waronker has also extensively exhibited his watercolors throughout the United States and abroad, including Smithsonian’s International Museum of Art and Design in Atlanta, Skirball Museum in Los Angeles and the Graham Foundation Gallery in Chicago.

SUNY Canton President Zvi Szafran, who worked with Waronker at his previous post at Southern Polytechnic State University, said he would like to start an Art Exhibit series at SUNY Canton.

Synagogue in Africa

“I’ve always been attracted to the way that Jay uses color to describe the wonderful buildings in his paintings,” Szafran said. “This will be a great start to a series of exhibitions where we can feature artists including our own faculty, staff and students.”

A similar exhibit and talk on Synagogues in India will be presented at 2 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Congregation Beth El in Potsdam.
