Canino School of Engineering Technology Open House Draws Future Students

More than 200 guests attended SUNY Canton’s third Engineering Open House, held Tuesday evening in Nevaldine Hall.

Faculty and students from the Canino School of Engineering Technology prepared more than 20 hands-on demonstrations. Guests could drive robots, take thermal images, learn to solder and crack computer passwords, among other activities.

Teams of two work to build their vehicles for the engineering challenge. Each team was given an assortment of supplies and craft items to build a vehicle capable of racing down a zip line.

“Our students are very proud of what they do here,” said Michael J. Newtown, dean of the Canino School of Engineering Technology. “They love showing the world what they’ve learned and how they learned it.”

Contestants prepare to launch their hand-built zip line racers in the annual engineering challenge.

The annual engineering competition challenged students from area schools to build the fastest zip-line vehicle using an assortment of objects. Participants in two age groups quickly assembled their racers in about 20 minutes. The thirty duos then raced to the finish line for prizes, ranging from model rocket kits to $1,300 scholarships to SUNY Canton.

Coinciding with the open house, the college held a career fair which brought in representatives from about 25 different companies. Students from all levels of education came prepared with resumes looking for internships and employment.

The Engineering Open House event serves to introduce younger students to STEM fields and helps them discover their technical ability and creativity. The college receives support from Corning Incorporated Foundation to hold the event.
