SUNY Canton Once Again Named a ‘STEM Jobs Approved College’
For the third straight year, SUNY Canton has earned a “STEM Jobs Approved College” designation by Victory Media, publishers of STEM Jobs magazine.
The 2016-17 STEM Jobs Approved Colleges list honors the top U.S. universities, colleges, community colleges and trade schools that are connecting students with high-demand STEM occupations.
Schools were scored on their ability to provide opportunities for students to explore STEM subjects, promote partnerships that foster STEM literacy, ensure coursework and activities have a focus on careers, and promote STEM programs to under-represented populations.
“We take great pride in our continued recognition as a STEM Jobs Approved College,” said SUNY Canton President Zvi Szafran. “In addition to the more than 30 STEM-related degrees we currently offer, the launch of the four-year Game Design and Development program opens up even more opportunities for students who want to pursue careers in growing high-tech fields.”
SUNY Canton offers the majority of its STEM-related degree programs via the Canino School of Engineering Technology. Students can pursue degrees in Alternative and Renewable Energy Systems, Graphic and Multimedia Design, Civil and Environmental Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Information Technology, and more.
Other STEM-related degrees include Nursing, Finance, Accounting and Veterinary Technology.
The college was also recognized for its efforts to encourage middle and high school students to pursue careers in science and technology by hosting annual events such as Women in Engineering Day and Engineers Day.
“With our STEM Jobs Approved awards, we’re able to help educators evaluate whether they’re meeting the needs of students by employing the kinds of programs that our research shows are most effective in getting students involved in STEM,” said Ellen Pomerantz, director of Educational Partnerships and Programs for Victory Media. “We’re pleased to showcase schools like SUNY Canton as an institution leading the way in this area.”
