SUNY Canton Scholarly Activities Celebration Features Nutrition Expert, Natural Medicine Symposium, and Student Design and Research

A world-renowned leader in sports nutrition and two natural medicine experts will speak at SUNY Canton during the weeklong Scholarly Activities Celebration.

SUNY Canton alumnus and Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist Dan Benardot, Ph.D., class of 1968, will return to his alma mater to deliver the keynote speech at 5 p.m. Monday, April 15, in the Richard W. Miller Campus Center’s Kingston Theater. He will discuss how nutrition strategies designed for professional athletes can be used by anyone looking to maximize their health and fitness.

Benardot is professor emeritus at Georgia State University and visiting professor at Emory University’s Center for the Study of Human Health. Prior to that, he was the nutritionist for the Atlanta Falcons from 2014 to 2017 and the 1996 Olympic gold-medal-winning USA Gymnastics team. He is the author of several books, including “Advanced Sports Nutrition” and “Nutrition for Exercise Science.” His research has been funded by the United States Olympic Committee, the Gatorade Sports Science Institute and the American Cancer Society.

The college will also host its third annual Symposium on Natural Medicines from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, April 13, in Payson Hall, Room 219. Activities include a plant identification lesson, smoothie-tastings and trivia contest. Guest speakers Michael B. Burgess, Ph.D., assistant professor at SUNY Plattsburgh, and Ryan Bradley, ND, MPH, from the National University of Natural Medicine in Portland, Ore., will discuss ancient remedies and the benefits of antioxidants.

The event is co-sponsored by the Canton College Foundation, the Northern New York Chapter of the American Chemical Society, Nature’s Storehouse and the Potsdam Food Co-op. It is free and open to the public, and those interested can find out more or register for the event.

SUNY Canton students and faculty will present their research projects from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, in the Southworth Library Learning Commons, followed by oral presentations from 4 to 7 p.m. in Cook Hall, Rooms 200 and 201. Topics include an analysis of whether electromagnetic radiation exposure from hybrid vehicles poses a health risk, the relationship between artificial photosynthesis and sustainable energy, and the role of health care professionals to assist human trafficking victims.

The Graphic and Multimedia Design program will host two art exhibitions: a senior showcase from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, April 16, 17, and 18 at the Roos House Convocation, Athletic and Recreation Center and a portfolio presentation from students enrolled in the Professional Practices course Thursday, April 18, in the Miller Campus Center, Rooms 218-220. Included works in both shows will represent a variety of media including photography, illustration and graphic design.
