SUNY Canton Public Relations Wins SUNY Design Award

Friday, June 29th, 2018

The SUNY Canton Public Relations Department recently received a State University of New York Council for University Advancement (SUNYCUAD) excellence in design award for a recruitment publication that introduces prospective students to the college.

Publications Coordinator Matthew J. Mulkin received a Judges’ Citation for an origami-style brochure that allows users to fold various panels to discover facts about SUNY Canton, such as student-to-faculty ratio, athletic and academic degree offerings, student life and more. The compact, easy-to-carry reference brochure was utilized by the Admissions Office during visits to college fairs and high schools. Mulkin designed the piece using a proprietary template by ProForma Infinity Printing.

“Most colleges’ print materials tend to be passive. Students flip through a pamphlet or catalog looking at photos and reading the content. Our piece, on the other hand, is interactive,” said Mulkin, who is a 2011 graduate of SUNY Canton’s Graphic and Multimedia Design Program. “Each section folds differently, revealing more information, infographics, photos and content. It’s the kind of brochure that people can’t put down.”

The piece was popular among high school students, many of them noting that the infinity flip design was more engaging than other recruitment publications they had received. It was described by admissions counselors as “game changing.”

Director of Public Relations Travis G. Smith accepted the award at the annual SUNYCUAD Conference held recently in Syracuse.

“Matt did an excellent job customizing the template to showcase the college in a unique, interesting way,” he said. “We continually strive to find innovative techniques that introduce prospective students to SUNY Canton and leave a lasting impression, so we’re grateful to be recognized with this award.”

SUNYCUAD is an organization representing professionals employed in institutional advancement areas, such as public relations, alumni and development, and marketing at every SUNY campus. The annual awards competition recognizes creative excellence in more than 40 categories, such as fundraising, internal communications, special events, media relations and photography.

This is the second SUNYCUAD award Mulkin has received. In 2014, he won a Best of Category award in outdoor advertising for the college’s bus shuttle design. The Public Relations Department has also won SUNYCUAD awards for website design, advertising, marketing, video production and writing.

Friday, February 23rd, 2018

SUNY Canton is continuing its tradition as a military-friendly college by waiving application fees for active-duty military, National Guard members, reservists, and veterans.

“Making college an affordable option for our military students is a priority for us, and we’re proud to be a leader in this area,” said SUNY Canton President Zvi Szafran. “This initiative, along with scholarship opportunities and other support services, are aimed to ease the financial burden for those who are serving, or have served, our country.”

In addition to the free application, the college employs a Military and Veteran Student Service Coordinator to help students navigate the programs and services that can assist them in reaching their educational goals. And to help acclimate military students to college life, the Raymond G. Modell ’62 Veterans Lounge and Battle Buddy Center is a designated area where veterans and active duty members can socialize and build camaraderie. The college’s online degrees also provide flexible learning options for those located overseas or those who need to relocate due to frequent permanent change of station requirements.

SUNY Canton Announces New Four-Year Game Design Program

Thursday, January 26th, 2017

SUNY Canton President Zvi Szafran has announced that the college has received approval to offer a new four-year Game Design and Development program.

“We are offering a comprehensive program focusing on the design and production of modern video games,” Szafran said. “This new area of study is a solid and logical development for our college.”

Gaming students

The new Bachelor of Science degree is the first of several new academic offerings created by the college’s professional faculty members to continue the college’s growth and expansion. It stands alongside 22 other career-driven four-year programs.

“Students will learn the most recent technologies, and programming skills to create video games on multiple platforms and devices,” said Canino School of Engineering Technology Dean Michael J. Newtown. “In addition to theoretical learning, students will have plenty of hands-on experience creating video games.”

Approximately half of men and a comparable number of women say they play video games on a computer, TV, game console, or mobile device according to Pew Research Center data. Two-thirds of young adults, or those of traditional college age, said they play video games.

Beyond popularity, the college looked at potential employment opportunities for students after graduation while assembling the proposal for the new program. A 2014 economic impact study conducted by Economists Incorporated showed that the video game industry increased in size by more than nine percent, or four times the growth rate of the U.S. economy, between 2009 and 2012.

Students gaming on laptops

“We are joining a multi-billion dollar industry,” said SUNY Canton Provost Douglas M. Scheidt. “The students in the Game Design program will gain marketable high-tech knowledge and skills that will be beneficial to their careers and entrepreneurial endeavors.”

The program has been approved by SUNY and the New York State Department of Education. It will complement the Graphic and Multimedia Design and Information Technology programs, as well as existing courses taught in multiple disciplines.

Students can begin in the Game Design and Development program (www.canton.edu/csoet/game/) at the start of the Fall 2017 semester. The SUNY Canton Office of Admissions will begin accepting applications for the much-anticipated program immediately. To apply, visit www.canton.edu/apply. SUNY Canton’s Assistant Director of Admissions Wins SUNY-Wide Award

Tuesday, June 28th, 2016

Chelsea ChaseThe SUNY Canton employee responsible for recruiting North Country students has won an award for exceptional service to the high school counseling community.

Assistant Director of Admissions Chelsea E. Chase received special recognition at the annual SUNY College Admissions Professionals (SUNYCAP) conference in early June. She was nominated for the award by her peers and area high school guidance counselors and selected from a pool of employees from across the entire SUNY system.

“Chelsea has served our students and parents in a professional manner and unselfishly gives her time to all of the schools in our area,” said Ogdensburg Free Academy Guidance Counselor Richard D. “Dick” Christy. “Her interpersonal skills and depth and breadth of knowledge about the programs available to students at SUNY Canton have benefitted many of our students throughout her career.”

Chase has been working at the college for nearly 10 years, and is one of the longest serving members of the admissions team. The majority of SUNY Canton students come from her territory.

“Chelsea visits every high school in St. Lawrence County during the travel season and makes multiple trips back to each school for supplemental visits throughout the year,” wrote Senior Admissions Counselor Hannah Young in the formal nomination submission. “She also organizes financial aid literacy days for her applicants where she reviews each student’s award package with them so each applicant is completely prepared to start their first day of college.”

The Assistant Director of Admissions was completely surprised when she received the commendation. Director Melissa J. Evans was thrilled to see Chelsea recognized for her years of hard work and dedication. “It was exciting to see the surprise on Chelsea’s face when her name was called, but really I can think of no one more deserving.”

“It is great to recruit for SUNY Canton because our programs really do make a difference in today’s society,” Chase said. “The affordability, hands-on learning and dedicated faculty that characterize our college combine to produce a positive and caring educational environment. I truly enjoy representing the campus and it’s ideals.”

Director Melissa J. Evans was also a panel speaker at the SUNYCAP conference where Chase received her award. Senior Admissions Counselor Julia E. Radley also served on the organization’s executive board representing all of the SUNY Technology Sector colleges.

SUNY Canton Jump Start Program Launches July 25

Thursday, May 26th, 2016

SUNY CantonMore than 50 students will start college early this year at SUNY Canton.

The college will be holding its Jump Start residential program to help students as they transition from high school to college beginning July 25, approximately five weeks before the start of the Fall 2016 semester.

“Jump Start helps strengthen students’ English, writing and math skills and has a special segment targeting financial literacy,” said Molly A. Mott, dean of academic support services. “It is designed to create a sense of belonging and community for students through a highly structured routine of morning physical activities, group meals and even study sessions.”

The program was funded through a $575,000 grant from SUNY’s Investment and Performance Fund, which helps support the goal of boosting the number of degrees awarded annually statewide to 150,000 by 2020. Other than a $105 deposit, which will be applied toward the semester’s fees, the program is offered free of charge to deserving students.

Students will begin the classes in one of the college’s more than 40 applied learning programs after successfully completing the program.

“By the end of the five week program students will be better prepared for classes, in stronger physical condition, and will have a group of friends who can help support each other throughout college,” said Melissa Evans, SUNY Canton’s director of admissions.

For more information about the program, contact the college’s Office of Admissions, by phone, (315) 386-7123 or email admissions@canton.edu.
