Tuesday, September 11th, 2018

US News RankingsSUNY Canton has earned a spot in the annual U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges publication.

The college was ranked 26thamong its peer institutions in the “Regional Colleges – North” Division for 2019. The ranking was released Monday, Sept. 10 and is based on graduation and retention rates, assessment of academic standing, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, graduation rate, alumni giving, and other statistics.

“We are proud of our continued growth at SUNY Canton,” said SUNY Canton Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Douglas M. Scheidt. “In addition to our outstanding career driven programs, we’ve been making concerted efforts to increase our retention and graduation rates, and we’re exceeding expectations in those indicators of college success.”

Scheidt indicated that faculty engagement with students and additional resources, including the college’s textbook loan program and unique coursework options, have helped students continue their education. The college also boasts an impressive placement rate with nearly 90 percent of graduates continuing their education or starting a career in their chosen field, according to graduate survey results.

Over the past year, the college added several four-year degrees that will allow graduates to enter expanding, high-paying fields, including programs in Cybersecurity, Technological Communications, and Mechatronics Technology. These areas are in perfect alignment with an economy that demands a work force equipped with robust STEM skills. SUNY Canton also unveiled a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Care and Management, to help address the need for high-quality early childhood education options in New York.

In addition to adding educational options, the college is also emphasizing cocurricular skills in leadership and cultural competency, which will help students earn distinctions outside of their traditional coursework.

Earlier this year, SUNY Canton received a U.S. News ranking recognizing its online programs. The college was tied for the number 88 position with five other colleges out of more than 350 institutions from across the united states. About 25 percent of the college’s enrollment is entirely online and almost every single student takes an online class over the course of their education. There are currently 16 fully online academic programs available and off-term Summer and Winterterm courses.

In addition to U.S. News and World Report, the college has recently received the following rankings:

SUNY Canton Unveils New ‘eSports Arena’

Friday, August 24th, 2018

The college has partnered with Extreme Networks and Alienware to outfit a competitive gaming space.

SUNY Canton has opened the first collegiate esports arena in the State University of New York system. It is one of the largest dedicated gaming installations in the Northeast.

The 1,800 square-foot gaming room went online with the start of classes as the home for the college’s growing esports program. There will be a grand opening for the “eSports Arena” featuring competitive gameplay in October.

“Our arena is modeled after a professional gaming environment,” said SUNY Canton President Zvi Szafran. “The atmosphere and technology provide an overall immersive experience. It will give our students a competitive edge as they face off against rival college teams.”

“This space is one of a kind in SUNY,” said Kyle Brown, assistant vice president of information technology. “We’ve partnered with industry leader Extreme Networks to provide high-speed networking for the room and Alienware to equip the space with high-end Area 51 computers.”

Extreme’s Smart OmniEdge and Automated Campus solutions deliver high-speed WiFi, management and analytics capabilities so SUNY Canton can optimize network resources and troubleshoot on the fly, ensuring optimal performance.

“Every millisecond counts during an esports game, and a robust network is a prerequisite when it comes to preventing potential performance issues, such as connectivity glitches or slow Internet connection,” said Bob Nilsson, director of vertical solutions at Extreme Networks. “By deploying our high-density, low-latency network solutions that are used by professional sports venues across the nation, SUNY Canton can ensure a seamless, stable connection whether practicing or in the heat of competition.”

With 25 high-end gaming rigs, SUNY Canton now has the largest installation of Alienware machines in New York state, according to company representatives.

Each station is equipped with ergonomic gaming chairs, multicolored LED backlit mechanical keyboards and mice. The room itself has been retooled with indirect lighting, lockers for the students and a team meeting space that will double as a streaming station for live broadcasts. In addition to the high-end gaming computers, the college added stations with both Sony PS4 Pro and Microsoft Xbox One X consoles to add future gameplay options.

The room was funded through the SUNY Canton Provost’s Office to facilitate further growth in the programs closely related to esports. In addition to Game Design and Development, the college offers Cybersecurity, Graphic and Multimedia Design and Technological Communications.

“Academically speaking, the addition of esports enriches the student experience,” said Douglas M. Scheidt, provost and vice president for academic affairs. “It also adds more opportunities for our online students, who account for more than 25 percent of our overall population.”

SUNY Canton became the first SUNY College to offer varsity esports in December 2018. Teams play as members of the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE), the most prominent nationally recognized organization dedicated to competitive collegiate video gaming. The college also orchestrates matches through the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Association (ECAC), in addition to University League of Legends (ULOL).

“The new Roos eSports Arena is one of the top college competition spaces in the nation,” said Randy B. Sieminski, director of athletics. “By adding this space, SUNY Canton has shown its strong commitment toward our esports future. As a result, we will continue to see an increase in student recruitment, engagement and retention, mirroring our traditional athletic offerings.”

The college recently added both FIFA and Fortnite to its fall lineup. Other teams include Overwatch, League of Legends and Hearthstone.

SUNY Canton Sets Summer Session Enrollment Record for Fifth Consecutive Year

Tuesday, June 26th, 2018

SUNY Canton has set a new enrollment record for its popular online Summer Session five years in a row.

Registration has increased every year since 2013 and reached an all-time high of 2,003 enrollments this summer, which surpasses the previous record of 1,966 enrollments set in June 2017. The college’s Winterterm session has also seen dramatic growth during the same time period.

Summer Session

The upward trend is chiefly due to SUNY Canton’s renowned reputation for excellence in distance learning, in addition to the variety of subjects offered.

“Our investment in the development of online courses is paying off in the form of increased enrollments for our Summer and Winterterm sessions,” said Molly A. Mott, SUNY Canton associate provost and dean of academic support services and instructional technologies. “We are able to give students the opportunity to earn credit in the area of their choice between traditional spring and fall semesters.”

Summer Session, which began May 30 and runs until Aug. 15, is open to anyone. More than 130 courses were available in a range of topics, including art, business, economics, law, history and physics. Those looking to explore more unique subjects could enroll in the popular “Comic Books as Literature” course, which examines the similarity between superhero comic books and graphic novels to other forms of fiction.

Because credits earned during Summer Session are easily transferrable, a large contingent of students from private universities and other SUNY schools consistently utilize the course offerings year after year.

“It’s a very convenient way for them to catch up, graduate early or satisfy prerequisites for their major,” Mott added.

Another advantage of Summer Session is that it allows New York state students to meet the 30-credit annual requirement to qualify for the Excelsior Scholarship Program.

SUNY Canton Creates ‘Flex Classes’ for Traditional and Online Students

Friday, February 16th, 2018

SUNY Canton is developing new course options that adapt to the needs of modern learners.

Until last semester, courses have been offered in two formats: through traditional on-campus classes; or by participating in online lectures and discussion boards through SUNY Canton OnLine. Last semester, the college began offering Flex Classes, which allows a student to attend a lecture one day and participate online the next.

Umesh Kumar teaches a Flex Class

Pictured is SUNY Canton Associate Professor Umesh Kumar, who teaches Finance, presenting a Flex Class. Kumar is wearing a video camera tracking device and a headset microphone to record and broadcast his lecture as he is teaching it.

“Flex Classes help promote student retention and completion rates,” said Associate Provost and Dean of Academic Support Services, Molly A. Mott “They remove barriers to education and fit into the busy and complicated lives of our students, especially those who are continuing their education. We see this as the future of higher education.”

The class is broadcast live during and the video is integrated with the college’s online learning software. Students participating from off of campus can ask questions as part of the class, and all students can watch the online recorded lecture.

Marela M. Fiacco, an instructor who oversees the college’s Healthcare Management program, volunteered to be the first faculty member to pilot the program for her Intro to Health Services Management course. She taught in a special classroom equipped with digital video cameras that follow her as she presents the course material.

“I told my face-to-face students that attendance is flexible,” Fiacco said. “This was especially important for our non-traditional and commuter students who have families and career obligations.”

Out of the 30 students who were enrolled, about nine opted to come to the twice-weekly class.

The instructor assigned group assignments that paired students participating from both on and off of campus.

Healthcare Management recently became the most popular major at the college, with more than 200 students enrolled in the fall 2017 semester. The majority of those students are working professionals who are seeking to advance their career by getting a bachelor’s degree.

SUNY Canton is expanding its Flex Classes through a Performance Improvement Fund grant from SUNY. A portion of that funding is also used to increase engagement with the college’s substantial online student population by offering expanded college resources. “We want to establish a better connection with our online students,” Fiacco said.

Two Flex Classes are currently in session during the spring 2018 semester and the college plans to continue research into, and development of, its newest educational delivery method. Students have been enthusiastic about the new mode of course delivery. “It’s a neat experience and I look forward to the future of the class and more like it,” said Michael B. Smithers, a Heathcare Management Student from Heuvelton.

SUNY Canton Winterterm Enrollment at All-Time High

Tuesday, January 9th, 2018

Enrollment for SUNY Canton’s online Winterterm session has reached a record high for the fourth consecutive year.

Total enrollment for the 2017-18 session is 1,487, which breaks the previous record of 1,474, set last year. Courses began Dec. 20 and continue until Jan. 18.

Molly A. Mott, associate provost and dean of academic support services and instructional technologies, said the session’s continued popularity is due to the college’s reputation for excellence in  online instruction. She noted that a large percentage of students that enroll attend other public and private colleges throughout New York.

Winterterm 2017-18

“Students receive the same quality instruction SUNY Canton is known for in an accelerated schedule, allowing them to earn credits that are easily transferrable to their home institution,” she said. “We offer more than 90 courses, many of them general education courses, in a variety of subjects, including finance, business, marketing, art history and creative writing.”

Mott added that off-term sessions such as Winterterm support SUNY system-wide completion goals by helping students graduate on time, as well as allow them to meet the 30-credit annual requirement to qualify for the Excelsior Scholarship Program.

SUNY Canton’s online degree programs have been ranked among the best in the country for four years in a row by U.S. News & World Report. In addition, several online programs have been specifically recognized by independent research organizations for their affordability, such as Finance, Legal Studies, Nursing, Health Care Management and Criminal Justice: Law Enforcement Leadership.

Winterterm’s growth closely mirrors the college’s online Summer Session, which has also enjoyed a significant increase in enrollments for the past four consecutive years.

SUNY Canton’s Summer Session Enrollment Growth Continues

Tuesday, July 25th, 2017

For the fourth consecutive year in a row, SUNY Canton has seen an enrollment increase for its online Summer Session.

Enrollments have increased at an average rate of approximately 6 percent per year since 2013. The college currently has 1,966 enrollments for summer 2017.

Summer Session

The success is due to SUNY Canton’s strong reputation for excellence in distance learning, as well as the variety of courses offered, according to Molly A. Mott, associate provost and dean of academic support services and instructional technologies. She noted that the college’s Winterterm session has also seen dramatic growth since 2013.

“We have invested a significant amount of time and resources into developing our online courses, and the overwhelming popularity of our off-term sessions is a direct result of that investment,” she said.

This summer, more than 130 courses were offered in a range of topics, including art, management, law, economics and history. Those looking to explore more unique subjects could enroll in the popular “Comic Books as Literature” course, which examines the similarity between superhero comic books and graphic novels to other forms of literature.
