SUNY Canton’s Online Programs Make U.S. News and World Report’s ‘Best Bachelor’s Degrees’ List

Thursday, February 23rd, 2017

SUNY CantonSUNY Canton’s online baccalaureate programs have been named among the best in the country for a third time by U.S. News and World Report.

The college was one of only three SUNY schools to earn a spot in this year’s rankings. Programs were scored on various categories including student engagement, faculty credentials and training, student services, admissions selectivity, and peer reputation.

“This recognition is a reflection of the time and resources SUNY Canton has invested into the quality of our online classes and programs throughout the past 15 years,” said President Zvi Szafran. “This award, along with our consistent online enrollment growth, is a direct result of that investment.”

The college was ranked 76th out of the more than 1,200 programs surveyed by U.S. News. Only regionally accredited institutions whose programs were offered in an online format were evaluated.

SUNY Canton currently offers 13 online degree programs and recently announced the launch of a Bachelor of Business Administration in Agribusiness Management, which can also be earned online. The program is designed to prepare students for skilled careers in agriculture.

“It’s important that we offer the option for students to earn their degree entirely online,” Szafran added. “Professionals who want to continue their education while working full time will benefit from the flexibility of our programs.”

In addition to new degree programs, the college has seen an increase in enrollments for its winter and summer off-term online sessions. In January, enrollment for the Winterterm session reached an all-time record for the third consecutive year. Students from both public and private colleges in New York and throughout the country utilize the sessions to fulfill requirements at their home institutions.

“Our off-term sessions deliver the same quality instruction SUNY Canton is known for to anyone, anywhere in an accelerated format,” said Molly A. Mott, associate provost and dean of academic support services and instructional technologies, “The abbreviated course schedule allows students to catch up or get ahead between traditional fall and spring semesters.”

The U.S. News online rankings for 2017 are available on their website.

SUNY Canton Breaks Winterterm Enrollment Record

Tuesday, January 10th, 2017

Enrollment for SUNY Canton’s online Winterterm session has reached an all-time record for the third consecutive year.

Total enrollment for the 2016-17 session is 1,474, which surpasses the previous record of 1,434, set last year. Classes began Dec. 21 and continue through Jan. 19.

According to Molly A. Mott, associate provost and dean of academic support services and instructional technologies, the session’s popularity is due to the variety of course offerings and the college’s reputation for excellence in online learning. Approximately 100 courses were available in an array of subjects, including finance, business, marketing, art history and creative writing.

“Our Winterterm session delivers the same quality instruction SUNY Canton is known for to anyone, anywhere in an accelerated format,” she said. “The four-week course schedule allows students to catch up or get ahead on credits between the fall and spring semesters from the comfort of their home.”

Mott noted that a large percentage of Winterterm enrollees are those who attend institutions other than SUNY Canton.

“As in the past, a significant number of students from public and private colleges throughout New York — such as Stony Brook, Syracuse University and Binghamton University — utilize our course offerings year after year.”

Off-term sessions such as Winterterm support SUNY system-wide completion goals by allowing students the flexibility to earn credits that may help them graduate on time or even early. Another advantage of the online session, Mott said, is that the college guarantees every course that is advertised will be offered.

SUNY Canton’s online degree programs have been ranked among the best in the country for three years in a row by U.S. News & World Report. In addition, several online programs have been specifically recognized by independent research organizations for their affordability, such as Finance, Legal Studies, Nursing, Health Care Management and Criminal Justice: Law Enforcement Leadership.

Winterterm’s growth closely mirrors the college’s online Summer Session, which has also enjoyed a significant increase in enrollments for the past three consecutive years.

According to Molly A. Mott, dean of academic support services and instructional technologies, the upward trend is due to a number of factors, including the college’s reputation for excellence in online learning, its student-centered policies and the expansion of course offerings.

“This year more than 100 courses were available in an array of disciplines, including business, finance, criminal justice and social science,” she said. “The variety appeals to students from not only the SUNY system, but from private colleges in New York state and across the country. They can earn credits that are transferrable to their home institution.”

SUNY Canton has been offering online courses during the Winterterm break since 2005, which originally consisted of 160 enrollments and 18 courses. Throughout the past 10 years, the college has seen a dramatic increase in demand for online courses and has attracted a large contingent of students from schools such as Syracuse University, Stony Brook University, SUNY Albany and SUNY Binghamton.

The college’s virtual classroom format allows students to catch up or get ahead on credits between the fall and spring semesters, which directly supports SUNY system-wide goals for access and completion. Another advantage of the online session, Mott said, is that the college guarantees every course that is advertised will be offered.

The successful Winterterm session follows on the heels of a record-breaking 2015 online Summer Session, which has seen a significant increase in enrollments during the past three years.

SUNY Canton Receives High Marks and Number One Rankings in Student Opinion Survey

Wednesday, October 21st, 2015

According to the 2015 SUNY Student Opinion Survey, SUNY Canton is excelling in student service-, academic- and facility-related areas.

The survey, which evaluates the 27 state-operated SUNY colleges and university centers, is conducted every three years and assesses student satisfaction in more than 50 areas. SUNY Canton earned number one rankings in three categories: library resources, library services and tutoring services.

“We’re extremely gratified that our students highly value our exceptional resources,” said SUNY Canton President Zvi Szafran. “We’re committed to ensuring their success, and these results—evaluated by the students themselves—prove it.”

The Southworth Library Learning Commons has most recently enhanced the laptop and iPad loan program; integrated Quick Response Codes, video and podcasts to meet patron needs; and expanded hours during exam periods.

“The Southworth Library Learning Commons is a focal point of engagement for the campus community,” said SUNY Canton Dean of Academic Support Services Molly A. Mott. “It is rich in academic resources, including our Tutoring Center, which offers both professional and peer tutors who support our students’ academic needs.”

The survey also measured SUNY Canton against six peer technology-sector institutions: Alfred State, SUNY Morrisville, SUNY Delhi, SUNY Cobleskill, SUNY Farmingdale, SUNY Maritime. SUNY Canton took the top spot in 13 areas, one of which was the quality of the college’s laboratory facilities.

“The college’s state-of-the-art nursing, veterinary technology, engineering technology labs, as well as the newly constructed Business Learning Center, are just a few examples of facilities that support hands-on, applied learning, which is a hallmark of SUNY Canton,” said SUNY Canton Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Douglas M. Scheidt, Ph.D.

Another area that students ranked first among technology-sector schools was SUNY Canton’s Office of Career Services, which offers a number of resume writing, interview and networking workshops, as well as individualized coaching for those who are entering the work force. In addition, during the 2014-2015 academic year, the office brought nearly 100 local and regional employers to campus to recruit students for job opportunities.

“We like to begin working with first-year students in developing their resumes and creating a plan,” said SUNY Canton Director of Career Services Julie A. Parkman. “They continue to use our services throughout their academic career to obtain summer jobs or internships that enhance their educational knowledge. All these experiences prepare our students to begin their professional careers.”

Career Fair

Within the academic arena, students praised the availability of online courses, ranking the college first in the technology sector. Over the past several years, SUNY Canton has enjoyed increased growth in online course enrollments, due in large part to expanded course offerings. This year the college’s online programs were ranked among the best in the nation by U.S. News and World Report.

“SUNY Canton’s online courses offer the same high-quality instruction as a traditional classroom setting,” added Mott. “In addition, our Summer Session and Winterterm courses help students finish in four years, which supports SUNY System-wide goals for access and completion.”

Additional areas that earned the top spot in the survey when compared to technology-sector schools included athletic and recreational facilities, health and wellness programs, religious and spiritual programs and social media presence.

SUNY Canton Staffer Tops 200 mpg in a Home-Built Automobile

Friday, April 24th, 2015

SUNY Canton OnLine staff member Jerry J. Bartlett has once again proven that he can top the fuel efficiency of some of the most modern vehicles on the market with his home-built diesel coupe.

Bartlett, who graduated from the college in 2004, recently competed in the 11th annual Toyota Green Grand Prix at Watkins Glen International racetrack. Bartlett rallied for a second year in his home-built diesel Urba Centurion and picked up an award for the most innovative vehicle.

Jerry Bartlett's Urba Centurion

“All of the parts of the car are designed to work together,” he said. “The body’s aerodynamic design allows it to cut through the wind. The three-cylinder Kubota engine maximizes fuel efficiency and gives it enough horsepower to achieve highway speeds.”

Final tallies estimate his creation at about 250 mpg. In comparison, the Toyota Prius is Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rated at 51 mpg, and the Tesla Model S is EPA rated at 95 mpg.

While the official results of the competition are not in, Bartlett expects to be in contention for the Most Fuel-Efficient Vehicle award. He tied for the Green Grand Prix title last year against a completely electric vehicle.

Bartlett said his statistical data navigator Peter J. Cutler, assistant director of SUNY Potsdam’s Center for Graduate Studies, was instrumental in the record run. The two traveled 98 miles around the racetrack, using .391 gallons of diesel fuel, which cost $1.25.

His car is based on designs by Robert Q. Riley. Bartlett first saw the Centurion plans in a 1982 copy of “Mechanix Illustrated.” A version of the car was used in the movie “Total Recall” for its futuristic appearance.

Bartlett said that much of the engineering and inspiration for his vehicle is a result of his involvement on an online Ecomodder Forum, which outlines everything from sustainable driving habits to electric vehicles. Many of the members of the online community participated and received awards at the rally.

“I want people to know that they can do what I have done,” he said. “It’s not easy, but it can be if you take it one piece at a time.”

The Toyota Green Grand Prix is an event dedicated to efficient auto technologies and fuels, energy management and ecological driving styles sponsored by a not-for-profit corporation of the same name.
