SUNY Canton Staff Member Publishes Poetry Collection

Thursday, April 6th, 2017

Amanda StopaAmanda E. Stopa, an assistant director for the SUNY Canton College Foundation and Office of Alumni Affairs, has published a book of poetry titled “Myths & Rituals.”

“I was inspired to write the book after I spent the summer in Rome in 2009,” Stopa said. “Thematically, the poems are about loss and healing, leaving home, and going back.”

She explained that the poems were composed over the course of eight years; some were written while earning her master’s degree in Creative Writing from Rutgers University from 2011-2013, while others were completed within the past year.

Stopa collaborated with Los Angeles-based photographer Chuck Lang, whose images are featured throughout the book.

Myths & Rituals“Chuck was gracious enough to allow his photos to be used in this way,” she said. “It’s very rare for a poetry publication to include photography because of the cost; but the publisher believed in the work enough to go forward with it.”

Stopa’s poetry has previously been featured in the “Best of Philadelphia Stories Anthology” and “Bearers of Distance Anthology.” She also won the 2016 North County Historical Writing Contest for her short story “Apricity.”

“Myths & Rituals” is available for purchase on Amazon.
