SUNY Canton Burns a Model Dorm Room to Promote Fire Safety

Tuesday, October 7th, 2014

SUNY Canton will be staging a fire in a model dorm room to raise awareness of fire safety.

The controlled burn is part of a daylong series of fire prevention training programs sponsored by the college’s Environmental Health and Safety office. SUNY Canton’s Fire Safety Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, on the Roselle Academic Plaza on SUNY Canton’s campus. The dorm room demonstration is scheduled for noon.

“The dorm room we will burn was built specifically for this demonstration by students in the Wood Structures class,” said Torey J. Russell, environmental health and safety coordinator. “It will be a learning exercise to demonstrate how quickly a fire can spread.”

Members of the Canton Volunteer Fire Department will be on hand to put out the dorm fire.

There will also be a fire extinguisher training simulator, and Christopher Taylor of the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control Office will be distributing information.

Fire Safety Day is designed to raise awareness and educate SUNY Canton students, faculty and staff members, but is also free and open to the public.
