Rendezvous Grand Opening & Ribbon Cutting

The SUNY Canton College Association celebrated the grand reopening of Rendezvous, the eatery located at the heart of the Richard W. Miller campus center, Tuesday (Sept. 6). The newly renovated cafe features custom hamburger meals with fries and hot or cold hero sandwiches and has already become a favorite dining destination on campus. There is also a soup station and fresh fruit and salad options. Rendezvous is open for breakfast at 7:30 a.m. and serves meals until 7 p.m. on weekdays. It is also open from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays. Pictured are Toni L. Besio, retail food service manager, SUNY Canton President Zvi Szafran, Roody Roo, the college’s mascot and Julian S. Welcome and Welcome Back! Here’s What’s New at SUNY Canton

A new sign, a renovated residence hall wing and two new dining options awaited students on the first day of class at SUNY Canton.

 

Students Moving In

Classes began for approximately 3,100 students at 8 a.m. Monday (Aug. 29) at the college. About 675 of those students are first-time freshmen. Nearly 1,300 students are living on campus.

 

New signage

The college also completed several major improvement projects over the summer. One of the most visible additions is the new LED sign stationed on Cornell Drive, which will be used to relay information about on-campus events, directory information and other important announcements.

 

French Hall

The campus also received two newly refinished parking lots, approximately eighty new streetlights and renovated gas lines as part of its $2 million site-improvement projects over the summer. Many of the improvements are designed to help the college become more energy efficient and make utilities easier to track and manage.

One wing in Heritage Hall has been completely renovated. The student rooms received a fresh coat of paint, new furniture, new LED lighting and new heating and ventilation units. The wing will be an example for future improvements at all four original residence halls.

 

Roos Court Dining Center

The college just opened Roos Court, a brand new eatery in MacArthur Hall, offering made-to-order salads and oven-toasted sandwiches in addition to its signature traditional homemade soups. Hours of operation are set for 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays.

Pet Wing

Nearly twice as many students have pets on campus this year. Growing demand led Residence Life staff to add an additional wing to the popular housing option in Mohawk Hall. Approximately 140 students can live with their cats, ferrets, rabbits, hamsters, gerbils and fish.

SUNY Canton College Association Treats Students and Supports Area Girl Scouts

The SUNY Canton College Association recently gave students Girl Scout cookies as an after-dinner treat at Chaney Dining Center.

The College Association works with young women from Troop 328 in Russell to support their fund raising efforts and distribute cookies to students with a SUNY Canton meal plan. More than 400 students received a free box of cookies this year.

“The Girl Scouts are always very well received,” noted Susan Law, director of dining services. “Some of our students are either active or former scouts, so they enthusiastically welcome the young women. They were really excited about a free box of cookies too.”

Proceeds from the cookie drive support the area troop and can help the scouts donate items or food to community members in need, according to Troop Leader Amanda D. Rowley. “Proceeds also allow us to go on a day-trip every summer. Most recently, we went to see Matilda on stage at the Syracuse Landmark Theatre.”

SUNY Canton College Association Supports North Country Girl Scouts

The SUNY Canton College Association recently surprised more than 1,000 college students with a free box of Girl Scout cookies. Young women from Troop 328 in Russell visited Chaney Dining Center to distribute dessert to diners with a campus meal plan.

“Our students were very appreciative and very supportive of the scouts,” said Susan D. Law, director of dining services. “Michael J. Perry [executive director of the SUNY Canton College Association] came up with the idea, and we both thought it would be nice to provide great cookies from a great organization.”

Students were happy with the addition to their dinners and the unexpected guests. Some former scouts shared valuable advice with the troop, and others stopped eating to take photos with the girls.

Chaney Dining Center Hosts Canton Jamaican Restaurant ‘Da Kitchen’

SUNY Canton’s Chaney Dining Center recently presented students with a full menu of Jamaican cuisine.

Dining center staff invited guest cook Jody A. Pitt from Da Kitchen in downtown Canton to cook her specialties. Pitt is a former student who saw the opportunity to share her cooking alongside the dinner service at Chaney.

“Chaney provided the ingredients and I provided my recipes,” Pitt said, as she stirred a large pot of rice in Chaney’s kitchen. “I’m so happy to see students come out. I love to see people enjoying our food.”

She prepared ox tail, curry chicken, rice and peas and jerk pork.

Students lined up for the specialty fares. Tracy T. Miller, a Sports Management Major from Brooklyn, was already a regular customer at Da Kitchen. Miller said he loved the convenience of having the food at the dining center. “I wish they had this all the time,” he added.

Susan D. Law, director of dining services, said having guest cooks from local restaurants fits in with the overall mission to tie food services with local vendors and growers. “We like to tie our operations with local businesses whenever we can,” she said. “In this case it gives students new options while helping Jody market her business.”

Steven W. Maiocco, assistant director of dining and executive chef said, “Our students love to try new things and are very appreciative of the expanded selection.”

The Dining Center also hosts local vendor and grower exhibitions each semester to highlight its ties with local businesses.

New Executive Chef Will Serve Up Local Flavor at SUNY Canton

SUNY Canton’s new executive chef will bring the best food the North Country has to offer to the campus’ community table.

Steven W. Maiocco assumed his duties as assistant director of dining and executive chef in December. The guiding principle of his culinary approach is to serve fresh, local food.

“It’s my job to ensure we’re using the freshest ingredients whenever possible, with a focus on locally grown and produced foods,” Maiocco added. “I am very excited to be working with dedicated members of the Dining Services team to continue the great work they do and to identify opportunities for us to improve our service to students, faculty and staff.”

Susan D. Law, director of dining services, said Maiocco’s duties entail overseeing food production across the entire campus, including catering services. He also will be responsible for training and overseeing food service team members.

“We are thrilled to welcome Steve to the SUNY Canton community,” Law said. “His talent and experience will be an invaluable asset to our campus.”

Maiocco is a 2004 graduate of Johnson & Wales University. Prior to joining SUNY Canton, he served as SUNY Potsdam’s executive chef. He also previously worked for Blue Hills Country Club in Canton, Mass.

“Our dining services are a significant part of campus life,” Maiocco said. “My commitment to the culinary arts, coupled with an outstanding team, will allow us to further enhance our students’ experience.”
