Friday, March 15th, 2013

In celebration of Women’s History Month, an upcoming panel discussion will bring together a unique group of community leaders who have been at the forefront of the political and social activism movement in northern New York for the past several decades.

panel speakersPanelists will share their personal stories about the impact of the women’s movement on the North Country at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 21, at SUNY Canton’s Southworth Library. Speakers will include: Ellen Rocco, station manager for North Country Public Radio; Karen St. Hilaire, St. Lawrence County administrator; and Veigh Mehan Lee, director of accommodative services at SUNY Canton.

“In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the social and political rhythms of the women’s movement were alive and well in the North Country, said SUNY Canton Interim President Carli C. Schiffner. “The activism and drive of these women led to many of the hallmarks of our community — Birdsfoot Farm, the Little River School, ReachOut and Renewal House. The synergy from these activists has forever left its influence on our community in northern New York, and many of these community leaders remain active.”
