SUNY Canton Announces Upcoming Leadership Lecture Series Presentations

The SUNY Canton College Foundation will be hosting two alumni speakers who focus on the medical and health professions during the month of September.

  • Myrna Thomas, a 1979 graduate and the vice president for quality assurance and regulatory affairs at Accupac Inc. will be presenting at noon, Thursday, Sept. 14, in the Richard W. Miller Campus Center Room 214. Accupac fills and packages a wide range of over-the-counter and prescription products for the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies. Prior to her current position, Thomas held senior management positions at Merck as managing director of worldwide clinical data management and vice president of global quality operations at Isolagen, among other positions.

 

  • Jeffrey Place, a 1980 graduate and the vice president of centralized nursing services at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas, will be presenting at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept 18, in Wicks Hall Room 102. After graduating with a degree in Nursing, Place moved to Texas to begin his career in a neurological intensive care unit, and later served as nursing supervisor and clinical manager of the intensive care and critical care units. He then took a position with Baylor University Medical Center as the administrative supervisor, and completed his bachelor’s and two master’s degrees. Place has served as a mentor to various students seeking leadership roles in nursing.

The Excellence in Leadership Lecture Series connects working professional alumni who are experts in their fields with current SUNY Canton students. The program is funded by Corning Incorporated Foundation and presented by the College Foundation and the SUNY Canton President’s Office. These events are free and open to the public.

Acclaimed Hospitality Consultant and Entrepreneur Speaks at SUNY Canton, Sept. 11

Doug ZeifA non-traditional SUNY Canton graduate who turned his lifetime of experience in the food and beverage industry into a multimillion-dollar consulting firm will be sharing his entrepreneurial success strategies during a college presentation.

Douglas Zeif, the principal of Next! Hospitality Advisors and founder and president of The Concept Gurus, will be the first Excellence in Leadership Lecture Series speaker of the fall semester. He will be presenting at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11, in the college’s Richard W. Miller Campus Center Room 212. The event is free and open to the public.

“Doug has experience throughout all levels of management,” said Professor Dr. Charles R. Fenner, who teaches business at the college. “His knowledge focuses on fixing problems within the hospitality industry and making companies more efficient. His presentation will be especially useful for our entrepreneurial students and can benefit north country business owners.”

Zeif is a true American success story and began his food service career as a grill cook at the age of 14. He held restaurant jobs throughout high school and his first years of college, and left his education to choose a career in restaurant management. He’s traveled extensively throughout Europe, Asia, Australia and The Americas honing his skills in the hospitality business and building a solid foundation on operations management.

His extensive resume includes serving as senior vice president for the Cheesecake Factory. He was partially responsible for developing the restaurant’s universal appeal and was responsible for overseeing the company’s explosive growth and development of the its product line.

Zeif returned to college at SUNY Canton and completed his bachelor’s degree in the Management program in 2013. He now works as an adjunct instructor at the college.

Construction Executive Speaks at SUNY Canton March 29

Ed BedellThe president and CEO of COP Construction will be presenting at SUNY Canton as part of the college’s Excellence in Leadership Lecture Series.

Edward Bedell is a 1969 alumnus who has established a successful career in construction project management. He is scheduled to speak at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 29, in Nevaldine Hall Room 102. Leadership Lecture Series presentations are free and open to the public.

“We are very fortunate that we are able to bring in established, professional, alumni who demonstrate the strengths of the applied education offered at SUNY Canton,” said Michael J. Newtown, dean of the Canino School of Engineering Technology. “Mr. Bedell is a perfect example of how a student can start here and go anywhere.”

Newtown said Bedell’s lecture would be of interest to students in a variety of the college’s engineering technology or STEM related fields and will also appeal to management students from the School of Business and Liberal Arts.

Bedell took ownership of COP Construction after working as the company’s Vice President of Operations. COP specializes in bridges, dams, concrete structures, water, sanitary sewer and storm drain utilities, water and sanitary sewer treatment plants, containment ponds, subdivisions, general site work, and recreational facilities.

He oversees operations in Montana, Utah, Idaho and Wyoming. The company employs between 200 and 350 full-time personnel and is widely recognized as a leading construction company in its region.

SUNY Canton Distinguished Automotive Alumnus Presents Monday, Feb. 27

Mark BondoniOne of SUNY Canton’s most successful Automotive Technology graduates will be a featured speaker in the college’s Excellence in Leadership Lecture Series.

Mark Bondoni, a 1982 alumnus and global remanufacturing and core supply manager for Ford Motor Company, will be presenting “Driving Your Future” at 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, in Nevaldine Hall Room 102. The lecture is free and open to the public.

“Mark is a fantastic example for students and alumni alike,” said Michael J. Newtown, dean of the SUNY Canton Canino School of Engineering Technology. “He embodies the college’s slogan ‘Great majors that lead to great careers.’ He demonstrates what can be done by linking enthusiasm for a subject with the ambition to succeed.”

Bondoni has held numerous positions during his 32-year career with Ford. One of his many notable successes came when he was parts and service manager at Ford’s Caribbean and Latin America District. He developed and launched a parts shipment initiative that slashed delivery time to Puerto Rico from 23 to 4 days.

He also served as the company’s NASCAR motorsports manager. He helped link his alma mater with Elliott Sadler, who raced a Ford at the time. Early SUNY Canton commercials featured the famous driver prominently and a hood from one of the cars is on display in the college’s automotive labs.

The SUNY Canton Alumni Association named Bondoni as Distinguished Alumnus at the college’s 2004 Commencement.

Korean Consul General and CEO of Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center to Speak at SUNY Canton

logo-lectureThe Republic of Korea’s consul general will discuss U.S.-Korean economic partnerships, and the CEO of Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center will talk about leadership opportunities in the healthcare field as part of SUNY Canton’s ongoing lecture series.

Gheewhan Kim, consul general for the republic of Korea, will speak at noon Thursday, Oct. 27, in the Richard W. Miller Campus Center, Room 218. Before assuming his current position, Kim was the minister for economic affairs at the Korean Embassy in Washington, D.C. He has also served at various overseas posts and completed his military service as a lieutenant in the Korean Navy.

Nate Howell, president and CEO of Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center, will speak at 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, in the Richard W. Miller Campus Center, Room 212. Howell has held senior executive positions at a number of hospitals across the country. He holds a Master of Business Administration from Cornell University and a Bachelor of Arts from Colby College.

“Our Excellence in Leadership Lecture Series and Visiting Diplomat Series offer unique opportunities for our students, community members, faculty, staff, alumni and elected officials to hear from distinguished guests whose expertise range from international relations and national defense to business and entrepreneurship,” said SUNY Canton President Zvi Szafran. “The lectures are held in a setting where attendees can ask questions and learn from leaders in their respective fields.”

Commander of the U.S. Air Force National Guard 174th Attack Wing Speaks at SUNY Canton

KilgoreU.S. Air Force National Guard 174th Attack Wing Group Commander Lt. Col. Michelle L. Kilgore will be presenting as part of the SUNY Canton Leadership Lecture Series on at 4 p.m. Monday, April 4, in Richard W. Miller Campus Center, Room 212. The event is free and open to the public.

Aside from being the first woman to hold her high-ranking position, Kilgore has flown combat missions in several large-scale military campaigns and logged more than 3,500 flight hours. She commands three squadrons and a detachment, 291 military personnel, more than 35 contractors, and more than 100 students annually. She also received numerous military awards.

She has a long history of service ranging from her time as the deputy branch chief of Unmanned Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance with the National Guard Bureau in Washington, D.C., in addition to a variety of command positions held while serving with the 174th Attack Wing Group.

CEO of C&S Companies Speaks at SUNY Canton, March 21

trimbleJohn Trimble, the President and CEO of C&S Companies in Syracuse, will be the next featured speaker in SUNY Canton’s Leadership Lecture Series.

Trimble will be presenting at 3:30 p.m. Monday, March 21, in Richard W. Miller Campus Center Room 218. All of the Leadership Lecture Series presentations are free and open to the public.

SUNY Canton has a well-established connection with Trimble and C&S Companies. The engineering, architecture, planning and construction service provider was responsible for consulting and other services for the college’s new footbridges, the renovation of the college’s four original residence halls, as well as the Roos House Convocation, Athletic and Recreation Center.

“In addition to being active advisors for several of our programs, C&S has hired many of our alumni,” said Michael J. Newtown, interim dean of the Canino School of Engineering Technology. “Mr. Trimble is sure to start a great conversation on how to start and advance a career in the engineering technology fields.”

Trimble began his career with C&S in 1990. He is responsible for overseeing all of the company’s design and construction projects and staff. He has also served as the company’s vice president, managed the industrial facilities design group, worked as a general manager for the construction management group, and was a design engineer in the transportation design group, among other positions.

He’s a professional engineer and a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (commonly known as LEED) accredited professional.

CEO of Nicholville Telephone Co. Speaks at Feb. 25 Lecture Series

DzwonczykThe latest installment of SUNY Canton’s Leadership Lecture Series highlights an entrepreneur who transitioned from Silicon Valley to St. Lawrence County.

Mark Dzwonczyk, the President and CEO of Nicholville Telephone Company, will be speaking about his experiences at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, in Richard W. Miller Campus Center Room 212. The presentation is free and open to the public.

Similar to the classic start-up story of Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, the legendary creators of Apple, Dzwonczyk built his first start-up company in a garage. He expanded the company into a leading VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) product design business with operations in both the U.S. and China.

Dzwonczyk moved to the North County to join the Board of Nicholville Telephone Company in 2011, and became its CEO later that year. His leadership brought a cultural change to the business that enabled an increase in subscriptions and recognition as a leading regional broadband company.

Nicholville Telephone Company is the parent company of Slic Network Solutions. The company has been heralded for providing high-speed Internet access to rural communities where it previously was not available.

He has been described as a recognized expert in telecom networks and technology. He’s also a Clarkson University Trustee and wholly committed to regional economic development.

Canton-Potsdam Hospital President to Present at SUNY Canton

David AckerThe President and CEO of Canton-Potsdam Hospital and the St. Lawrence Health System will be presenting at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, in SUNY Canton’s Woodcock Conference Suites room 212. The event is free and open to the public.

David B. Acker, J.D., is the latest area business leader to join the college’s ongoing Excellence in Leadership Lecture Series. He will be sharing his career path beyond college and imparting his strategies for success in the healthcare industry.

Acker is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and is a former chairman of the American Hospital Association Governing Council for Small and Rural Hospitals. He was also the chairman of the Education Committee of the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council and has numerous other outstanding professional credentials.

Canton-Potsdam Hospital is a leading healthcare provider and a part of the St. Lawrence Health System (SLHS). In addition to operating the two main hospital campuses in Potsdam and Gouverneur, SLHS also operates extension outpatient facilities in Antwerp, Gouverneur, DeKalb Junction, Edwards, Canton, Colton, Potsdam, Norwood, Norfolk, Brasher Falls, and Massena. Excellence In Leadership Lecture Series Features Corning Executive, Sept. 1

logo-lectureAn executive from Corning Inc. will be speaking to SUNY Canton students who want to become business leaders.

The Excellence in Leadership Lecture Series will be hosting a presentation by Margaret A. DiFabio, Corning’s Canton division manufacturing director, from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1, in Richard W. Miller Campus Center Room 212. The event is free and open to students.

DiFabio will be discussing the challenges and opportunities that came with her career path beyond college. She received her bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research and her Master of Business Administration from Syracuse University. She joined Corning in 1986 and has worked in a variety of positions with company.
