SUNY Canton Launches Responsive Website for the New Year

Monday, January 23rd, 2017

SUNY Canton has unveiled a new website to increase usability for both traditional and mobile browsing.

Director of Public Relations Travis G. Smith serves as the college’s web designer. After almost a year’s worth of work and testing, he released the entire site over the winter break in anticipation of the spring 2017 semester.

“Our newest updates allow us to combine our mobile and established websites into one responsive design,” Smith said. “The site is faster and more efficient. We’ve coupled our upgrades with larger photos and a front-page listing of our newest videos, while continuing elements of overall look and feel of the SUNY Canton brand.”SUNY Canton Homepage

During 2016, the college’s website exceeded 4 million hits. Mobile traffic accounted for more than a million, or about 27 percent, of those visits.

Smith developed web interfaces for mobile and PC based browsing to respond to the increase in mobile-based traffic in 2013. At that time, mobile traffic accounted for only 13 percent of the overall traffic.

The college’s website has gone through several major redesigns in the past 15 years, each one made it more efficient, attractive, and user friendly. A single designer and web editor accomplished all of these updates in house, saving the college money on costly contracts and consultants.

SUNY Canton Goes Mobile with New Website

Thursday, January 3rd, 2013

Responding to the increase in mobile web traffic, SUNY Canton has developed a web site specifically for the modern smartphone user.

Mobile Web Site

SUNY Canton’s new mobile website displayed on a smartphone. Users can also navigate to the original website.

The new site makes it easier and faster for anyone with a web-capable cellphone to access information about academics, admissions, athletics, and directions to the College.

“We identified the top reasons users are visiting our website and used that data to create a slimmer, faster web experience for our viewers,” said the College’s Web Designer Travis G. Smith. “Our overall website displays well on hand-held devices, but our new mobile website is far more streamlined and easily viewed on a small screen.”

During 2012, the College’s website had more than 2.2 million hits. Mobile traffic accounted approximately 200,000 visits, or roughly 10 percent of overall traffic and usage was up approximately 6 percent from 2011.

Following trends and the overall availability and versatility of mobile devices, like Apple’s iPhone or iPad and related Droid-operated devices, Smith decided to create the reorganized version of the web page.

Mobile Web Site

The SUNY Canton website displays flawlessly on tablet devices. The mobile version is intended to add ease of use on smartphones.

“Our current webpage already looks great and functions well on most tablets. Our next step will be to develop a universal web site that provides the same experience on both traditional PCs and mobile devices,” Smith said. “This is known as a ‘responsive’ design which will automatically adapt to whatever device someone may be using.”

The College’s website has gone through several major redesigns in the past 10 years, each one made it more efficient, attractive, and user friendly. A major advantage, past its overall ease of navigation, is its complete faculty and staff directory. The mobile site includes efficient rendition of the faculty and staff directory, making it easier for users to contact faculty and staff.

Users can still opt to access the full page from their mobile devices. For more information, or to view the mobile site, visit www.canton.edu from a smartphone.
