SUNY Canton President Selects Two Employees for Prestigious Award

SUNY Canton President Zvi Szafran announced the recipients of the 2017 President’s Meritorious Service Award at the college’s Recognition Day event Friday, May 19.

Janitor Brandy Bissonette and Assistant to the Provost Renee L. Campbell were both selected to receive the award, which is among the highest honors given at the college.

Bissonette, who works in Smith Hall, was nominated for her willingness to go above and beyond her job duties to ensure students have a positive experience living on campus. She has previously worked in MacArthur Hall and the Roos House Convocation, Athletic and Recreation Center.

“Brandy takes pride in what she does and is always there to lend a helping hand,” said President Zvi Szafran. “She is responsible, dedicated and an asset to the maintenance staff and the entire campus.”

Campbell was chosen for her outstanding dedication and service to SUNY Canton during her 15-year career. Her colleagues praise her professionalism and efficiency, as well as her skill at building relationships and collaborating with departments across campus.

Campbell started at SUNY Canton in 2002 as an agency service representative in the Student Service Center. In 2005, she was hired in the School of Business and Liberal Arts. She was promoted to secretary 1 in 2008. She received the SUNY Canton College Council Employee Recognition Award in 2013.

“Renee’s enthusiastic attitude, tireless work ethic and commitment to customer service make her an invaluable member of our campus community,” said Szafran. “She is a most deserving recipient of this award.”

The President’s Meritorious Service award is bestowed annually to members of the college’s faculty or staff who have consistently exceeded their normal job requirements. It is given at the discretion of the president.

Both awardees received a plaque and gift from the college at the ceremony.

SUNY Canton Staff Members Honored by College Council at Recognition Day

The SUNY Canton College Council honored several employees for outstanding performance as part of the annual Recognition Day event Friday, May 19.

General Mechanic Stanley P. Robert received the 2017 College Council Employee Recognition Award, which is presented annually to a classified staff member.

Robert began his career as a cleaner and was promoted to janitor, maintenance assistant and, finally, to general mechanic. He retired in December after 29 years of service.

Colleagues describe Robert as a master craftsman who has extensive knowledge of the carpentry, plumbing and electrical trades. His outstanding customer-service skills, work ethic and keen attention to detail made him one of the college’s most valued employees.

“There are very few people on campus who are known as the ‘go-to guy’ by staff as widely as Stan is,” wrote Physical Plant Director Patrick G. Hanss in his nomination letter. “He has been a true asset to the Skilled Trades department, and I can think of no one more deserving of this honor.”

The council also selected Registrar Memorie L. Shampine and the Public Relations Department to receive the 2017 Excellence in College Award, which is presented annually to non-teaching professional staff.

Shampine was chosen for her outstanding leadership and support of student success. During her 15 years with the college, she has worked in every position within the department, giving her expert knowledge about processes and procedures.

“Memorie works tirelessly for SUNY Canton to assure that course schedules meet the needs of students, faculty and staff, and that the Registrar’s Office provides mission-critical services in a timely manner,” wrote Jondavid S. DeLong, dean of the School of Business and Liberal Arts, in his letter of support. “Although this is often a thankless task, she effectively balances the needs of all constituencies each term and maintains a high level of professionalism.”

The Public Relations Department was selected for their collective contributions to promote the college’s brand, mission and vision. The scope of their duties include media relations, website and graphic design, social media management, advertising and marketing, and video production.

The office’s six employees are Director and Web Designer Travis G. Smith, Senior Media Relations Manager Gregory E. Kie, Public Relations Manager Lorette A. Murray, Publications Project Coordinator Matthew J. Mulkin, Videographer Morgan D. Elliott, and Office Assistant 2 Ellen M. Prashaw.

“The Public Relations Department’s service can be measured through their incredible performance of individual tasks on a daily basis and their superb teamwork on larger projects,” wrote Executive Director for University Relations Lenore VanderZee in her nomination letter. “Their unique skill sets and professionalism make it seem easy for them to provide the highest-quality service to SUNY Canton. But there is nothing easy about what they do and the extraordinary manner in which they do it.”

SUNY Canton Staff Member Receives Prestigious Award

An administrative professional who has worked at the college for more than 38 years has been chosen as the recipient of the 2016 SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Classified Service.

Janet E. Livingston, a secretary 2 in the office of the Dean of Academic Support Services and Instructional Technologies, was presented with the award at the college’s annual Recognition Day ceremony May 13.

Established in 2008, the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Classified Service rewards exceptional achievements and superior performance. Livingston is the first SUNY Canton employee to receive this honor.

She began her career at SUNY Canton as a stenographer in the Word Processing Center in 1977 and was promoted several times while working for Residence Life and Student Affairs. Her responsibilities in the Office of the Dean of Academic Support Services and Instructional Technologies include organizing the college’s academic recovery effort, which is critical to student retention.

“Janet understands student challenges and provides exceptional customer service to those who may be struggling academically,” said President Zvi Szafran. “She offers guidance and support to help them work through stressful situations.”

Szafran also noted that Livingston has regularly gone above and beyond the scope of her duties during the course of her career, most notably during a recent leadership transition where she supported two divisions. She is a member of the college’s Emergency Communications Team and volunteers her time to assist students with their transition from high school to college, particularly during new student orientation events.

“Above all, Janet is a strong student advocate and passionate supporter of student success,” Szafran added. “She uses her incredible knowledge about the college to help students complete whatever process they are seeking to navigate.”

SUNY Canton College Council Announces 2016 Award Winners

The SUNY Canton College Council recently presented two awards that recognize outstanding professional achievements and dedication to the college.

Director of Institutional Research Sarah E. Todd received the 2016 Excellence in College Service Award, and Secretary I Aimee E. Felt received the 2016 Employee Recognition Award. The council selects both winners after reviewing nominations from the entire campus community.

The Excellence in College Service Award is given annually to a member of the non-teaching professional staff for exceptional performance, professional ability and university service.

Todd, who began working at SUNY Canton in 2011, was recognized for playing a central role in helping the college’s leadership make informed decisions through her work to gather and report data. Her expertise has been instrumental in assisting with a number of initiatives, including SUNY Canton’s reaccreditation by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education in 2013 and the development of a strategic enrollment management plan.

“Sarah’s hard work, dedication, and commitment to personal and professional growth have helped SUNY Canton improve in ways that are critical to student success,” said President Zvi Szafran.

The Employee Recognition Award is given annually to a member of the college’s classified staff in recognition of outstanding service through performance and continued growth.

Felt was nominated for her administrative support to the School of Business and Liberal Arts. Colleagues and students praised her professionalism and exceptional customer service skills, noting her helpful and collegial demeanor. She has also demonstrated a desire to take on new challenges, including an adjunct teaching position.

“Aimee’s exceptional insight, judgment and ability to adapt readily to a changing working environment are just a few reasons why we are honoring her with this award,” said Szafran.

In addition to her professional responsibilities, Felt was also recognized for her involvement in a number of community service endeavors, including a campus food drive and an awareness campaign about sexual assault.

Both awards were presented at the college’s annual Recognition Day ceremony May 13.

Two SUNY Canton Faculty Members Win Meritorious Service Awards

SUNY Canton President Zvi Szafran selected two faculty members as the recipients of the 2016 Meritorious Service Award.

Elizabeth A. Brown, an associate professor who teaches in the Criminal Investigation program, and Janet Parcell-Mitchell, an assistant professor who teaches in the Health and Fitness Promotion program, both received their awards at the college’s recent Recognition Day Ceremony.

Brown was selected for her commitment to enriching the academic experience for students. She is the curriculum coordinator for the Criminal Investigation program, chair of the Strategic Planning Committee and the faculty athletic representative at the college. She also is the outgoing presiding officer of the faculty assembly, or the governing body for SUNY Canton academics.

“Liz has been invaluable to the college, and is someone who is highly respected for their diplomacy and willingness to make sure every voice is heard,” Szafran said. “In addition to her service, teaching requirements, and advising duties, she has completed her doctorate and published a book, which has become a popular teaching aid in her field.”

Parcell-Mitchell was recognized for the growth in the Health and Fitness Promotion program, which has more than tripled in size since she began her faculty appointment. Szafran also noted that she has helped employees and the community become healthier through the college’s Roo Watcher’s weight loss program and student-led exercise sessions.

“Janet volunteers to do whatever it takes to improve this campus for students, faculty and staff,” Szafran said. “She is truly an unsung hero on our campus as she takes on additional duties and works to provide the best education and service possible.”

Two Staff Members Receive SUNY Canton Awards

SUNY Canton recently recognized two staff members from Canton with top awards for professional staff.

Donna K. Matoes, an administrative assistant II in the TRiO Student Support Services Office, received the Employee Recognition Award, and Theresa C. Corbine, director of academic computing, received the Excellence in College Service Award. The SUNY Canton College Council bestows both awards after careful consideration of recommendations from the college community.

Matoes helps her office serve a population of first-generation students who may face academic challenges. She’s known to provide full support and assist students with care. She’s very giving of her time and has helped with student honor societies and various committees.

“Her compassion and empathy are seemingly endless and come naturally and effortlessly,” said Bruce P. Hanson, an academic specialist and Matoes’ colleague. “She can’t help it. It just spills out. It’s why students love her.”

Outside of work she has won the Caregiver of the Year Award twice from Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence County. She’s always willing to share her best with the people who need it the most.

Corbine has worked at the college for more than three decades and has been promoted four times. She’s been noted as a behind-the-scenes link to much of the success, growth and advancement of the college’s information technology structure and services.

“Theresa goes above and beyond to assist employees and find a solution to the problem immediately,” said Lisa E. Colbert, a lecturer in the Criminal Justice Department. “She is a wealth of knowledge as a staff member and is an important part of the SUNY Canton family.

Every member of the Information Services Department who reports to Corbine nominated her for the award, which served as testament to her abilities as a leader. She was previously recognized with the President’s Meritorious Service Award in 2005.

Two SUNY Canton Employees Earn President’s Meritorious Service Award

SUNY Canton President Zvi Szafran recently awarded two employees with one of the college’s highest honors.

Kathy A. Limoges, a secretary in the School of Business and Liberal Arts dean’s office, and Randy B. Sieminski, director of athletics, were named the 2015 President’s Meritorious Service Award winners at SUNY Canton’s Employee Recognition Day May 15.

Limoges retired this month after working at the college for 35 years. Described by her colleagues as one of the most respected professional employees on campus, she is also admired for her incredible work ethic and commitment to SUNY Canton’s students, faculty and staff. Limoges graduated from SUNY Canton in 1980 and previously earned the college’s Employee Recognition Award in 2006.

“Kathy exemplifies the true meaning of professionalism and dedication,” said Szafran. “She has given so much to our college that it’s only fitting we recognize her many accomplishments with this award.”

Sieminski began his tenure at SUNY Canton in 2005 as the college’s public relations director where he managed branding and marketing efforts that contributed to an unprecedented increase in applications and enrollment. Since his appointment to athletic director in 2010, Sieminski has guided the college through its transition to NCAA Division III status. In addition to adding five new sports teams, Sieminski and his staff have more than doubled the number of student-athletes, hosted this year’s New York State High School Cross Country Championships and have hosted the Regional Special Olympic Games and time trials for three consecutive years.

“Randy has contributed to the success of SUNY Canton in innumerable ways,” said Szafran. “His outstanding leadership in both public relations and athletics has helped the college realize dramatic growth during the past 10 years.”

Sieminski is also active in the community and has served as the Canton Chamber of Commerce president the past two years and is the president of the Canton Hoopsters Youth Basketball Association. He also coaches numerous youth sports. He is a 1987 graduate of St. Lawrence University.

Three SUNY Canton Staff Members Receive College Awards for Exceptional Service

A recent retiree was the surprise recipient of SUNY Canton Acting President Joseph C. Hoffman’s Meritorious Service Award.

Sandy J. Livernois, the former assistant to the provost, received her award at the College’s annual recognition day ceremony, designed to acknowledge the College’s faculty and staff for exemplary service and milestone anniversaries.

“No one on the campus was left untouched by the generous, dedicated service that Sandy selflessly gave to the College,” Hoffman said. “She has been the epitome of professionalism and kindness, not to mention fun, in all of the capacities that she has served.”

Livernois worked at the College for 34 years. She previously won the Employee Recognition Award in 2003.

Additionally, Heather C. Lauzon, a secretary in the Accommodative and Disability Services Office received the Employee Recognition Award, and Peggy S. Levato, director of alumni and development, received the Excellence in College Service Award. Both awards are bestowed annually by the SUNY Canton College Council to recognize professional staff for their outstanding work.

Depending on individual needs, some students need to take their tests outside of the classroom. Lauzon schedules more than 1,000 exams each semester. She works with faculty and staff members to coordinate special accommodations to help level the playing field for students with disabilities. Her co-employees and supervisor said she exhibits grace and professionalism and goes above and beyond her assigned duties.

“Heather possesses a superior work ethic,” said Veigh Mehan Lee, director of Accommodative and Disability Services and Lauzon’s supervisor. “She keeps the office operating in an organized manner.”

As one of the college’s premier fundraisers, Levato developed a relationship that led to the first $1 million donation in the College’s history. She also assisted with the College’s Centennial campaign, which exceeded its $10 million goal a year early. She substantially increased alumni participation in donations and attendance at college events. The donations she works to secure benefits the entire college, primarily in the form of student scholarships.

“Peggy has been a phenomenal fundraiser and energetic supporter of SUNY Canton,” said David M. Gerlach, vice president for advancement. “She has played a significant role in transforming many alumni relationships. Beyond being a representative of the College, she is a friend to our many esteemed alumni.”

SUNY Canton Online Learning Systems Manager Receives President’s Meritorious Service Award

SUNY Canton Interim President Carli C. Schiffner recently presented the College’s highest honor to a staff member who has played a large role in the expansion and success of the school’s online learning program.

Jerry J. Bartlett, online learning systems manager, received the 2013 President’s Meritorious Service Award at the College’s Recognition Day May 24.

“Jerry has become part of the fabric of our college,” Schiffner said. “His sense of inquiry led him to be a leader in online learning.”

Bartlett began working for the College in 2006. He provides technical support to faculty who teach online and maintains the software necessary to administer the courses.

SUNY Canton OnLine has grown rapidly over the past several years. The College is one of the leaders in online education in the SUNY system.

Bartlett credited the success of the department to the high level of customer service that he and his colleagues provide to faculty and staff.

“The people who I’ve worked with in this department over the years have been amazing,” he said.

Bartlett also volunteers his time to assist with training St. Lawrence County Law Enforcement Academy cadets and serves as a guest speaker during the College’s Sustainability Lecture Series.

Bartlett’s other accomplishments include living completely off-grid and building vehicles that get more than 100 miles per gallon. Here, he is shown in an electric hybrid tricycle of his own design.

“His contributions to our community are immeasurable,” Schiffner added. “He is selfless with his time and gives more than 100 percent with anything he pursues.”

In 2004, Bartlett graduated from SUNY Canton with an associate degree in Liberal Arts and Science. He resides in Colton.

SUNY Canton Facilities Director Receives President’s Meritorious Service Award

Michael McCormickAs SUNY Canton’s new athletic facility nears completion, SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy presented the College’s highest honor to a staff member who has been vital throughout the construction process of the building.

Michael R. McCormick, director of facilities, received the 2011 President’s Meritorious Service Award from SUNY Canton at the College’s Recognition Day on May 26.

“There is not a part of this campus that Mike’s hard work has not touched,” said SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy. “Without him, many of our larger renovations, new buildings and construction projects would not have been possible. His efforts to make this campus an even better place for students, faculty and staff have been exceptional.”

McCormick’s work with the Roos House athletic center received high praise from Kennedy at Recognition Day, which was just the second event held in the new facility. “We had the privilege of celebrating our faculty and staff members, as well as the College’s accomplishments, in the new building. That would not have been possible without the thousands of hours Mike put in to the athletic facility.”

As McCormick accepted the award, he thanked his family for their support and his staff for their work in making the athletic facility a reality. “My colleagues and the consultants and contractors responsible for the design and construction of the facility all worked together as a team,” he said. “It was everyone’s collective efforts that made this all possible.”

In his 14 years with the College, McCormick has taken on more responsibilities which include being SUNY Canton’s main interface with the State University Construction Fund and overseeing the College’s Physical Plant.

Throughout his tenure, McCormick has played a role in the many physical changes to the College’s campus. Recently, he has directed the rehabilitation of Nevaldine Hall and the first floor of Wicks Hall, as well as the repair and repurposing of Dana Hall. He also oversaw the construction of the Richard W. Miller Campus Center and the Newell Veterinary Technology Center.

In 1985, McCormick graduated from SUNY Canton with an associate degree in applied science in civil engineering. He earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1988.

He lives in Canton with his wife, Amy, and their children, Andrew and Breda.
