St. Lawrence, SUNY Canton Co-Hosting Digital Humanities Camp

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2016

St. Lawrence University and SUNY Canton will co-host The Humanities and Technology Camp (THATCamp), a model of open, free and participatory “unconference” that provides a less formal framework for exploring the intersection of the humanities and technology.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 10, at St. Lawrence in Eben Holden, and from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, March 11, at SUNY Canton in Southworth Library. Shawn Graham, associate professor of history at Carleton University in Ottawa, will deliver the keynote address at 4:45p.m. on March 10 in Eben Holden.

The event is free and open to the public.

Before the conference, participants propose sessions, which are then discussed and voted on by the group as a whole to set the agenda for the second day. The first day will include presentations of digital work by local scholars and students and an informal discussion group in addition to the keynote address.

“THATCamp provides a model for less formal exploration of digital projects and digital possibilities in the North Country,” said Leila Walker, assistant director of the Crossing Boundaries Mellon Humanities Grant and a co-organizer of the event. “We are excited to showcase the innovative work being done in the region and to introduce digital novices to new methods of research, pedagogy and storytelling.”

She added, “We hope that this event will be the first step in building a broad community of digital collaboration among North Country institutions.”

All are encouraged to register and participate. “The planning committee is working to ensure that our unconference is suited to participants at every level from undergraduate and graduate students to advanced academics, those already working in the digital humanities and pedagogy to those who maybe just want to get something started,” said Renee McGarry, contributing editor at Art History Teaching Resources and a co-organizer of the event.
