SUNY Canton Once Again Named a ‘STEM Jobs Approved College’

STEMJobs Approved Colleges 2016-17For the third straight year, SUNY Canton has earned a “STEM Jobs Approved College” designation by Victory Media, publishers of STEM Jobs magazine.

The 2016-17 STEM Jobs Approved Colleges list honors the top U.S. universities, colleges, community colleges and trade schools that are connecting students with high-demand STEM occupations.

Schools were scored on their ability to provide opportunities for students to explore STEM subjects, promote partnerships that foster STEM literacy, ensure coursework and activities have a focus on careers, and promote STEM programs to under-represented populations.

“We take great pride in our continued recognition as a STEM Jobs Approved College,” said SUNY Canton President Zvi Szafran. “In addition to the more than 30 STEM-related degrees we currently offer, the launch of the four-year Game Design and Development program opens up even more opportunities for students who want to pursue careers in growing high-tech fields.”

SUNY Canton offers the majority of its STEM-related degree programs via the Canino School of Engineering Technology. Students can pursue degrees in Alternative and Renewable Energy Systems, Graphic and Multimedia Design, Civil and Environmental Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Information Technology, and more.

Other STEM-related degrees include Nursing, Finance, Accounting and Veterinary Technology.

The college was also recognized for its efforts to encourage middle and high school students to pursue careers in science and technology by hosting annual events such as Women in Engineering Day and Engineers Day.

“With our STEM Jobs Approved awards, we’re able to help educators evaluate whether they’re meeting the needs of students by employing the kinds of programs that our research shows are most effective in getting students involved in STEM,” said Ellen Pomerantz, director of Educational Partnerships and Programs for Victory Media. “We’re pleased to showcase schools like SUNY Canton as an institution leading the way in this area.”

STEM JobsFor the second consecutive year, SUNY Canton has been designated as a “STEM Jobs Approved College” by Victory Media, publishers of STEM Jobs magazine.

The organization also announced that SUNY Canton is a “Top 5 Industry Award” winner for geoscience.

Both honors recognize schools that demonstrate a strong commitment to students pursuing STEM programs and careers.

The 2016 STEM Jobs Approved Colleges list rates universities, colleges and trade schools on their ability and responsiveness to connecting programs and students with STEM occupations. Schools were scored on areas such as student opportunities, industry partnerships, career-driven coursework and engaging under-represented populations.

SUNY Canton offers associate and bachelor’s degrees in more than 30 STEM-related programs. Four-year programs include Alternative and Renewable Energy Systems, Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Nursing and Veterinary Technology. Two-year degrees include Engineering Science and Dental Hygiene.

The college was also selected for its efforts to expose elementary, middle and high school students to STEM fields through the annual Women in Engineering Day and Engineering Open House.

New this year, the Top 5 Industry Awards recognize the colleges and employers who contribute the most to STEM workforce development and diversity. Results from more than 1,000 entries nationwide placed SUNY Canton among the top five colleges that offer degree programs that prepare students for careers in geoscience.

SUNY Canton offers a bachelor’s degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering Technology, where students can choose to study in areas such as geotechnology, water and wastewater testing and treatment, and environmental remediation. The college’s state-of-the-art lab also allows students to master soil and water collection and testing procedures. Employment opportunities for civil and environmental engineering technicians are expected to expand due to increased awareness of environmental issues and more stringent regulations.

SUNY Canton Named a ‘STEM Jobs Approved’ College

Stem Jobs CollegeSTEM Jobs magazine today announced that SUNY Canton is included in its 2015 list of STEM Jobs Approved Colleges.

The list is the first of its kind to rate universities, colleges, community colleges and trade schools on their responsiveness and relevance to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) occupations. SUNY Canton was chosen specifically for its program diversity and successful job placement.

“This distinction is a fitting recognition given SUNY Canton’s strong emphasis on applied learning in STEM fields,” said SUNY Canton President Zvi Szafran. “By preparing our students to be competitive in these high demand, high growth areas, we are helping fill a critical need in New York State’s job market.”

The college offers bachelor’s degrees in a number of STEM-related programs, including Alternative and Renewable Energy Systems, Civil and Environmental Technology, Electrical Technology, Mechanical Technology, Nursing, and Veterinary Technology. Associate programs include Civil Engineering Technology, Engineering Science and Dental Hygiene.

Earlier this year, the Civil and Environmental Technology, Electrical Technology and Mechanical Technology programs received initial accreditation by ABET, the premiere engineering and engineering technology accrediting body. All three boast a 100 percent placement rate for graduates. Most new hires within these fields are earning salaries of more than $50,000 annually.
