“SUNY Canton is thrilled to have the opportunity to host the #4Co Associated Colleges Student Leadership Conference this year,” said SUNY Canton Dean of Students Courtney B. More than 100 students are expected to attend the all-day event. Discussion topics will range from understanding and interpreting nonverbal communication to creating an inclusive and engaging organization.

SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy congratulates MacKenzie O. Belden of Hammond for receiving the 2009 David R. Maynard Student Activities Award.

A SUNY Canton Early Childhood student and a Student Activities Office Secretary are being awarded for their involvement at the college.

MacKenzie O. Belden of Hammond has been selected to receive the David R. Maynard Student Activities Award and Student Activities Secretary Jennifer Kelsey has been selected to receive the Northstar Award. Both will be among the honorees at SUNY Canton’s 101st Ceremony to be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 16, outside across from French Hall.

Belden and the Early Childhood Club were involved with several key activities this year, including a winter clothing drive for economically disadvantaged children and families, and an “adopt a soldier” program. She and her peers helped ensure both projects were a complete success.

Jennifer Kelsey

Jennifer Kelsey will receive the Northstar Award at the 101st Commencement Ceremony on May 16.

“There is no doubt the recognition given to the club was in large part due to the leadership, dedication, and volunteer efforts of MacKenzie,” said Early Childhood Education Program Director and Associate Professor Maureen Maiocco. “She has put in a lot of time and effort into promoting the club. She ensures that members are engaged and that the club is on task.”

Belden will be earning her second SUNY Canton degree this year, having previously earned a degree in Liberal Studies in 2007. She has consistently been on both the President’s and Dean’s list for her academic achievements. She was inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society in the Fall of 2008 and currently serves as the organization’s vice president.

Kelsey, a 2003 SUNY Canton graduate, has consistently gone above and beyond her job duties, according to her colleagues and students. She’s one of the driving forces that makes the office a fun, vibrant place, and she is the first contact point for students.

This year, Kelsey served as a volunteer staff mentor, advisor, and supervisor of the student yearbook “The Paysonian.” She’s the go-to person for members of the Student Cooperative Alliance, the College Union Board, as well as all student-run clubs and organizations.

The David R. Maynard Student Activities Award is given annually to a student who demonstrates superior citizenship, outstanding leadership, and who has generously given time to extracurricular activities. The Northstar award is hand selected by students and is given annually to a faculty or staff member who makes the college a better place.

SUNY Canton offers a wide variety of career-driven bachelor’s, associate, and certificate programs, as well as three master’s degrees in conjunction with SUNYIT, Utica. Most of SUNY Canton’s new four-year programs are designed so students can take them on-campus, online, or both. SUNY Canton OnLine features more than 100 courses online each semester. The College offers a four-day academic week allowing students greater flexibility for work, family, or other obligations. The College’s athletic teams belong to the NAIA’s Sunrise Conference, enabling students to compete in their respective sports for four years.
