“The Student Government Association (SGA),  the Student Affairs office and the College Association all wanted to thank the officers for all they do to support its students,” said Khaina A. Solomon, a SUNY Canton Management major and SGA President. “Nearly everyone I know appreciates all the work University Police does for the campus.”

UP-Day

University Police provides a safe and secure environment for the entire campus community and assists local law enforcement agencies. Most recently, an officer helped save a life by administering Naxolone (also known as Narcan) to an unresponsive overdose victim at an off-campus residence. SUNY Canton’s Student Government Association Reveals New Campus Memorial

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2016

The college’s Student Government Association (SGA) revealed a new monument Feb. 2, called the Memorial Rock, located in the campus Peace Garden. The association has established the memorial as a place of reflection, remembrance, and celebration of life. The plaque on the rock says, “Forever Remembered, Forever Missed.”

“Student Elliot Mullings passed away days after the spring 2014 semester was over, so we began a new academic year with the loss still heavily lingering in everyone’s mind. We felt we needed to a place to grieve or celebrate the lives of those who have passed,” said SGA President Khaina A. Solomon.

Mullings, who was a junior in the Criminal Justice: Law Enforcement Leadership program was very active and well known on campus. He passed away in May 2014.

“We wanted to give something back to the campus,” Solomon added. “The association has been working on the memorial project for about two years, and with the help of many campus staff members and Northeastern Sign Corporation in Colton, it has come to life.”

The ceremony included a poem from Mariama Cisse, a junior majoring in Applied Psychology; a song by Rebecca Jean-Baptiste, a junior majoring in Liberal Arts; and speeches by SGA executive officers Fatizjah Burnett and Rachel “Nikki” Zeitzmann.

Students plan to use the rock for Sept. 11 ceremonies and as a possible practice area for Funeral Services Administration students.
