SUNY Canton Students Join Tau Phi Zeta Honor Society

The Alpha Chapter of Tau Phi Zeta Honor Society at SUNY Canton welcomed 20 new members. 

Students in the Veterinary Technology and Veterinary Science Technology programs were inducted into the honor society Oct. 17, coinciding with National Veterinary Technician week.

SUNY Canton’s veterinary technology programs are among the oldest in the state. Graduates become licensed veterinary technicians who work as part of a care team providing medical assistance to all types of animals. Students are trained in anesthesiology, radiology, medical and surgical nursing, laboratory procedures, pharmacology, among other skills.

The programs work with area animal shelters to provide spaying and neutering services and vaccinations for dogs and cats. During the 2018-2019 academic year, college veterinarians spayed or neutered more than 130 animals.

Tau Phi Zeta was founded at SUNY Canton as the first national veterinary technology honor society. It is designed to provide recognition for high scholarship standards. Membership is offered to those students who exemplify outstanding scholastic achievement, leadership, a demonstrated love of animals, outstanding work ethic, professional behavior, and exemplary character.

SUNY Canton Announces Outstanding Graduate Sarah M. Ray

Sarah RayA SUNY Canton student Veterinary Technology graduate will be receiving the college’s Outstanding Graduate Award at the college’s 108th Commencement this weekend.

Sarah M. Ray of New Windsor is being recognized for her community service endeavors, academic achievements and leadership abilities. As a graduate of the Veterinary Technology program and member of the student Veterinary Technology Association, she has volunteered at animal shelters in the North Country and in her hometown.

She has been both a member and President of SUNY Canton’s Habitat for Humanity student chapter and has helped build homes for families in need in Pittsburgh, Pa., and Delray Beach, Fla.

“Sarah has played an integral part in the alternative spring break trips,” said Grants Coordinator and former Habitat for Humanity chapter advisor JoAnne M. Fassinger. “She also has superior organizational skills, which are evidenced through her coordination of several bottle and can drives that raised funds to cover travel expenses for the students.”

Ray is the Secretary of the Tau Phi Zeta honor society and was named to the SUNY Canton President’s List every semester. She works as a peer tutor in the Office of Accommodative Services and the Math and Science Tutoring Center. She previously earned an Associate Degree in Veterinary Science Technology from SUNY Canton and is a licensed veterinary technician. Following graduation, she plans to continue her education at Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine.
