Professor Commended for Coast Guard Auxiliary Detachment at SUNY Canton

SUNY Canton Professor Brian K. Harte, Ph.D., recently received a U.S. Coast Guard Meritorious Team Commendation for creating an auxiliary detachment at the college.

The professor was praised for demonstrating exceptional resourcefulness and work ethic for helping to create the 20th university partnership in the nation.

The Prudent StudentHarte, who teaches in the college’s Criminal Justice programs, planned and organized the detachment as part of the Auxiliary University Program so students would have access to training and advanced opportunities offered exclusively through the Coast Guard. In all, 22 students joined the detachment during the first year of the program.

SUNY Canton’s program is connected with the Massena Flotilla of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Harte was promoted to Professor, the highest rank for a teaching faculty member at the college, in 2014. He has authored award-winning research in the economics and business fields with other faculty members at the college. He recently published the e-book “The Prudent Student: A Professor’s Guide for College Success.”

SUNY Canton Joins U.S. Coast Guard’s Auxiliary University Program

Coast-Guard-AuxiliaryStudents now have the option of adding free training from the U.S. Coast Guard to their SUNY Canton education.

The college was recently selected for the Auxiliary University Program (AUP), which allows students to gain nautical education, operational training experiences, aviation studies training and homeland security training. SUNY Canton is the 20th AUP in the nation and among the first in New York, according to Professor Brian K. Harte, Ph.D. Harte is the faculty member responsible for establishing the new partnership.

“Students who participate in this free program will have the ability to establish internships and apply for officer candidate school opportunities,” Harte said. “Those who successfully complete the program will receive the distinction of being recognized as Auxiliary University Program graduates.”

The Massena Flotilla of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will be holding a formal ceremony to recognize the new partnership with SUNY Canton at 6 p.m. Friday, March 27, in the Richard W. Miller Campus Center’s Woodcock Conference Suites Room 212.
