USA Luge Slider Search at SUNY Canton, Sept 26-27

Monday, September 1st, 2008

CANTON- The USA Luge Slider Search has selected SUNY Canton as one of only eight recruiting locations in the nation this year.

USA LugeScouts, coaches and Olympic medalists will be holding luge training clinics from 9 a.m. to noon and from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27, and Sunday, Sept. 28, at SUNY Canton, during the college’s Fall Festival and Family Weekend events. Each 3-hour clinic is open to athletes ages 11 to 14 who register prior to the event.

According to USA Luge Slider Search, the organization has traveled over 220,000 miles introducing the sport of luge to more than 19,000 eager young athletes. Guided by US Olympic and National Team coaches and athletes, each series stop allows participants to learn the fundamentals of riding a luge sled, including positioning, steering and stopping. Once these skills are developed, athletes then take several runs down a paved luge course on wheel-equipped luge sleds.

The clinics are very rigorous and challenging. Athletes should be in good physical form to compete.

Athletes who excel through this program are invited to Lake Placid, Park City, Utah or Marquette, Mich. to try luge on ice at a USA Olympic Luge sanctioned training site. Top young athletes from this group may be selected for the next year’s development team.

The USA Luge Slider Search is a grass roots organization sponsored by Verizon and U-Haul with the mission of identifying, training and qualifying young athletes for the USA Luge Junior Development Team. Athletes who progress through the six-rung development ladder have hopes of becoming members of the Senior National and Olympic Luge Teams.

Each participant will need to register for one 3-hour clinic before the event. Register by phone at 1-800-USA-LUGE or by visiting Registration fee is $15 per athlete. A parent or legal guardian must attend the clinic with each athlete. Each participant will receive a free slider search t-shirt courtesy of Verizon.
