The 12 members of the SUNY Canton University Police department have put their faith in someone of phenomenal conviction.
The Rev. Timothy G. Canaan of Canton was recently named University Police Chaplain.
“Father Timothy is one of the best people I know,” said SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy at a recent University Police Department meeting. “I believe in his tremendous belief in all people and I recognize that those beliefs stem from his tremendous faith.”
Kennedy presented Canaan with an official certificate of his new title and Chief of University Police William F. Mason presented him with a badge denoting his new affiliation.
“I am honored to have one of the only University Police Chaplains in the entire SUNY System,” said Mason. “By naming him University Police Chaplain, we are formally recognizing all of his service to our college and to the department.”
Canaan has been Parish Priest of St. Mary’s Church in Canton since 2002. He completed his theological studies at Mount St. Mary’s in Emmitsburg, Md., and was ordained in 1993. He serves as a minister for the SUNY Canton, St. Lawrence University, St. Mary’s School, and the David Sullivan St. Lawrence County Law Enforcement Academy.
He is well known at the college for his joviality and enthusiasm.
