Wednesday, April 17th, 2013

Siobhan Fallon, winner of the 2012 Pen Center Literary Fiction Award, will discuss her celebrated collection of short stories, “You Know When The Men Are Gone,” at SUNY Canton.

Fallon’s visit, which will be the final installment of the Spring 2013 Living Writers Series, will take place at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, in the Kingston Theater. The event is free and open to the public.

fallonPraised by The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe and The Wall Street Journal, “You Know When The Men Are Gone” offers a glimpse into the lives of military families living in Fort Hood, Texas. Described as “gripping,” “fascinating” and “extraordinary,” Fallon’s debut book explores the challenges that service members and their families must face on the battlefield and the home front.

Fallon found inspiration for the book from her personal experience as an Army wife living in Fort Hood and the difficulties she encountered during her husband’s multiple deployments to the Middle East.

SUNY Canton Assistant Professor of English Philip K. LaMarche created the series and arranges guest lectures to correspond with his Living Writers Course curriculum so that students can read the books by authors scheduled to visit the College.

“Siobhan Fallon gives us the Odyssey of our times, telling stories about the long road home from the front lines, about the soldiers and families fighting the wars we as a country seem so quick to forget,” LaMarche said.

Fallon’s stories and essays have appeared in Publishers’ Weekly, Women’s Day, Good Housekeeping, among other publications. She is currently working on a novel and writes a monthly fiction series for Military Spouse Magazine.
