SUNY Canton Offers New Dental Hygiene Bachelor's Degree

Dental hygienists looking to advance their careers can now turn to SUNY Canton’s newest bachelor’s degree.

SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy announced the approval and immediate start of a Bachelor of Technology in the Dental Hygiene program. The new four-year Dental Hygiene degree builds upon the college’s highly successful two-year program. Program specific courses are slated to begin on January 21, 2008, coinciding with college’s spring semester.

“The new Dental Hygiene bachelor’s degree will enable students and professionals to further progress their careers in a multitude of ways,” said Kennedy. “It will open doors to opportunities in areas such as administration, education, pharmaceutical sales, marketing, management, research, public health, and many others.”

Future SUNY Canton students, recent graduates, and transfer students can apply for admission into the four-year degree immediately. The final two years of the bachelor’s program are offered exclusively online.

“After two years of intensive clinical study, dental hygienists are qualified to enter the work force and begin their careers,” said Kennedy. “This program allows them to continue as a working professional and also earn a bachelor’s degree. We’re confident this major will attract students from all over New York State.”

Dental hygiene is a rewarding and flexible career. It is a progressive profession that allows those who are balancing a family and a career the luxury of choosing either part-time or full-time employment. The average annual salary for a full-time hygienist nationwide is $56,700; with an average annual salary of $48,000 to $52,000 in the Syracuse and Utica areas. The addition of a bachelor’s degree will assist in creating even more opportunities.

“Our current two-year program has been an extraordinary success and this new offering will undoubtedly be viewed as among the best in the industry,” said Program Director Susan Willette. “It will provide hygienists with significant career flexibility and leadership growth opportunities.”

Some of the courses offered in the program include: Contemporary Dental Hygiene Issues, Grant Writing Strategies, Contemporary Periodontics, Legal and Ethical Issues in Health Care, Dental Hygiene Research, Practice Management/Conflict Resolution, as well as the Dental Hygiene Internship and Senior Seminar.

Dental Hygiene is the College’s fourteenth bachelor’s degree program. Other bachelor’s degree programs pending state approval include Graphic and Multimedia Design, Applied Psychology, Forensic Science Technology, Management Information Systems, and four-year Nursing.
