Promotions and New Hires Announced at SUNY Canton

SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy recently announced several administrative promotions for the Fall 2010 semester and welcomed all new employees to the College.

“One of the key reasons that we’ve been able to maintain our level of growth is by placing the right people in the right careers at the College,” said Kennedy. “Through key promotions and new hires, we will be able to continue our trend and continue to move forward.”

Among the employees to receive recent promotions at SUNY Canton:

  • Linda D. Pellett will be starting her first full semester as provost and vice president for academic affairs. Pellett previously served as the dean of the School of Science, Health, and Criminal Justice.
  • Molly A. Mott was promoted to vice president for student affairs to replace retiring Vice President Daniel J. Sweeney. Sweeney will continue working as the dean of students until his retirement. Mott was previously the dean of academic services and retention.
  • Kenneth A. Erickson was promoted to dean of the school of Science, Health and Criminal Justice to fill the position left vacant when Pellett moved into the provost position. Erickson was previously a professor and chair of the science department, served as an interim dean of the School of Business and Liberal Arts, and is the former faculty assembly chair at the College.
  • Randy B. Sieminski was promoted to assistant vice president for advancement/athletic director. He will assume the duties of athletic director and continue to oversee aspects of the advancement division, including the office of public relations.
  • Diane Para, Ph.D. was promoted to professor and program director for the College’s new sports management bachelor’s degree. Para previously served as athletic director.
  • David F. Norenberg was promoted to director of the office of admissions. Norenberg was previously the director of the career services office.

New hires include:

  • Bruce F. Alexander was hired as the associate facilities program coordinator. He was previously the director of operation at Millrock Technology Park in Holladay, Utah. Alexander is a certified director of facilities and has accreditations from several industry specific organizations. He received his bachelor’s degree in facility management from Brigham Young University in 2007.
  • Megan S. Bernier was hired as public relations coordinator. She was previously an assistant dean of undergraduate admissions at Clarkson University. Bernier received her master’s degree in educational leadership at St. Lawrence University in 2009.
  • Michelle Currier was hired as an assistant librarian at Southworth Library. She has been an adjunct faculty member at SUNY Canton for the past year and a librarian for Potsdam Central School District, and a teacher at several North Country school districts. She earned her Masters in Library Science from Florida State University in 2006 and is currently pursuing a second master’s in Creative Writing from National University.
  • Shani Y. Curry was hired as an assistant professor in the criminal justice department. She was previously a paralegal instructor from Atlanta Technical College. She earned her Juris Doctorate from the Florida State University College of Law in 1998.
  • Pamela E. Enser was hired as the assistant registrar. She will take over when the College’s current registrar, Barbara N. Porter retires later this fall. Enser was previously the coordinator of the office of student services in the College of Education at SUNY Fredonia. She is currently working on post-master’s graduate studies through the University of Buffalo.
  • Mark D. Howlett was hired as the Kangaroos men’s soccer coach. He was previously the men’s assistant soccer coach at Nazareth College in Rochester. Howlett received his bachelor’s degree in marketing from Judson University in Elgin, Ill., in 2008.
  • Troy D. Lassial was hired as a residence hall director in Rushton Hall and intramural and free recreation director. He was previously the running back coach for the St. Lawrence University men’s football team. Lassial earned his master’s degree in educational leadership from St. Lawrence University in May.
  • Brandy L. Lawrence was hired as a residence director in Smith Hall. She worked the past three summers as an Upward Bound counselor coordinator, tutor, counselor, and residence staff member at SUNY Canton. Lawrence received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from SUNY Cortland in May.
  • Mathew C. Nichols was hired as an online Learning Technician for SUNY Canton OnLine. He was previously a Tier 2 Technical Support Representative at Fused Solutions in Potsdam and was formerly a combat engineer in the United States Army Reserve. Nichols earned his bachelor’s degree in information systems and business processes from Clarkson University in 2008.

SUNY Canton’s College in Bosnia Recognized by President Clinton

In June 2010, the American University in Bosnia and Herzegovina celebrated their inaugural graduating class of 18 students who received SUNY Canton degrees.

“As all of you surely know, Bosnia Herzegovina is dear to my heart.” Former President Bill Clinton said in a video address to the 2010 AUBiH graduating class. “Although I couldn’t be there to wish you well in person, I’m honored to be able to send this special message to the 2010 graduates, the first ever generation of students who studied at the American university of Bosnia Herzegovina to receive an American diploma. This remarkable achievement is something that you can be proud of. I congratulate the founders of this university and their partners at the State University of New York for this profoundly important initiative.”

The former president levied a challenge to graduates, telling them that they were the generation that will lead Bosnia and Herzegovina into Europe and help to make dreams of their compatriots come true.

The southeastern European nation has struggled economically since the Bosnian War. Top officials are partially looking toward higher education as means to create a contingent of entrepreneurs and other leaders who will help continue to rebuild the nation.

The students earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from SUNY Canton and a degree from their home university. They accomplished some of their course requirements through live video relayed classes and online courses broadcast and maintained by SUNY Canton faculty members under the guidance of College President Joseph L. Kennedy. Kennedy and top-level college staff attended AUBiH’s first commencement ceremony to recognize the College’s alumni.

“What makes our relationship with the American University in Bosnia Herzegovina so unique is they quite literally would not exist without SUNY Canton,” Kennedy said. “This is a completely new College that has become extension of us and all that we do well. We offer a career driven education where it’s needed most to those who will use it the best.”

Students take about 70 percent of their courses from professors at AUBiH and 30 percent from SUNY Canton faculty members. “Every course is our course, every student is our student,” Kennedy said. “The entire curriculum was developed at SUNY Canton.”

College officials from both universities have noted that the relationship is innovative because the European students have access to an American education from their home university. Students can also opt to attend a five-week summer program and be immersed in American culture in Canton. Currently, the 2011 class is attending their summer semester at the College.

Associate Professor Charles R. Fenner, Ph.D. is one of the lead faculty members to work with the classes from Bosnia. He said the students gain exposure to multiple viewpoints on business and finance issues, with examples of intellectual property and business management concepts. “The Bosnian students debate topical contemporary American issues as they pertain to their studies,” Fenner said. “They’ll discuss current events and discuss subjects including steroid use in sports, confidentiality issues, and whether health care should be universal or private.”

Dubravko Martinović, one of the top graduates at AUBIH, addressed his classmates, via live video feed at SUNY Canton’s Commencement. “To be the first at something gives one great satisfaction, and we are proud to be the first generation of graduates from AUBIH,” he said. “I want to thank you for four memorable years, and an unforgettable semester spent at SUNY (Canton). For us, it was never just an education, it was a life experience.”

SUNY Canton has articulation agreements allowing dual degrees with a half-dozen universities overseas, and several colleges in the United States. It was the first SUNY College to link with Lomonosov Moscow State University in Russia. Most recently, College officials began creating a dual-degree program with the American University in the Emirates.

SUNY Canton Earns Military Honors

SUNY Canton is considered one of the top colleges in the nation for members of the military community.

The College was among only 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools throughout the country to be recognized as a 2011 Military Friendly School, announced by G.I. Jobs earlier this week.

“The hard work of so many on our campus has earned us this distinction,” said SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy. “We have known for a long time that we are a military friendly campus that serves the needs of those within that community. This recognition confirms that others are aware of all we do as well.”

Over the last several years, Director of the Center for Lifelong Learning Kathryn M. Del Guidice organized SUNY Canton’s Military Friendly Committee. She worked with Robert L. Edwards, professor of criminal investigation, to assess all programs on campus and their responsiveness to the needs of the military community, which includes veterans, spouses and children of active duty service members, those in the National Guard and Reserves, and the ‘Wounded Warriors’ who are attending college as part of their transition from active duty.

Through their efforts, SUNY Canton now features a Veterans Lounge, a specific individual within the Admissions office to work with incoming military students, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) training of the College’s counseling staff, and a Veteran’s Day ceremony.

Edwards, who also serves as director of service members learning opportunities, and William Fassinger, associate professor of criminal investigation, organized the SUNY Canton Veterans Association.  Students from the Association have presented the colors at the last two commencements, a tradition the College will continue.

“This recognition hits home for many within our campus community,” Edwards said. “A number of our faculty and staff are veterans, including Dr. Kennedy. More than 135 active duty service members, veterans, as well as their spouses and children were enrolled at the College last year. We have become a place that is trusted to serve our military and their families. This could not have been accomplished without the collaboration between the registrar, financial aid, admissions, the veterans on campus and the faculty and staff at the College.”

In 2008, SUNY Canton illustrated the importance of the College’s veterans to its graduating class. In 1943, twenty-seven students were called into service just weeks before their commencement. The veterans, who have come to be known as SUNY Canton’s Greatest Graduates, left to serve the country in World War II. In a heartfelt and emotional ceremony, President Kennedy presented four members of the class and a spouse of a deceased veteran with honorary certificates in their respective programs. Those veterans who could not attend the ceremony were honored for their sacrifice, some of them posthumously.

G.I. Jobs’ list was compiled through exhaustive research starting last April during which they polled more than 7,000 schools nationwide, according to their press release. Criteria for making the list included efforts to recruit and retain military and veteran students, results in recruiting those students, and academic accreditations.

Students Moving In at SUNY Canton

SUNY Canton faculty, staff, and student volunteers will be on campus throughout the weekend to assist new students as they move in for the first time.

The Fall 2010 academic semester starts at 8 a.m. Monday, August 23, at the College, making this the first busy weekend of the semester.

Welcome Incoming 2010 Students

“We’re anticipating a third consecutive year of record enrollment,” noted SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy. “We were hard-pressed to top last year’s enrollment of 3,300 students, but our admissions office has brought in another outstanding class while increasing selectivity.”

Among the events surrounding opening weekend include:

  • Freshman and transfer students will be moving on campus beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday, August 21 at SUNY Canton.
  • Representatives from the SUNY Canton Parent-Family Association will be staffing hospitality areas all-day Saturday.
  • Returning students are scheduled to move back in beginning at 8 a.m. Sunday, August 22.
  • Games and orientation events will be held beginning at 10:45 a.m. Sunday on the College’s turf field.
  • A special welcome for all 400 first-year experience students will be held at noon Sunday on the College’s turf field.
  • A College-wide picnic will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, August 23, on the Roselle Academic Plaza.

On-campus housing is full, and courses are filling up quickly. Students are encouraged to process their bills before the start of the semester to ensure a smooth transition. SUNY Canton Adds Sports Management Degree

SUNY CantonSUNY Canton has received state approval to offer a new Sports Management bachelor’s degree beginning this fall. Internships with professional sports organizations and college athletic departments are among the exciting possibilities for students in the program.

Several students who were anticipating the program’s approval have already enrolled to begin courses in the upcoming fall semester. The New York State Education Department and the State University of New York recently approved the Bachelor’s of Business Administration in Sports Management program, an addition to the College’s School of Business and Liberal Arts.

“As the only college within a three-hour radius to offer this type of degree, we anticipate a lot of eager students looking to enroll in the program,” SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy said. “We’re excited to be the place where employers will turn to find people who have the skills and talents needed to become successful members of any organizational management infrastructure.”

Among the professional sports organizations the college has established potential internship opportunities with are the Chicago Blackhawks (NHL), Syracuse Crunch (AHL), Binghamton Mets (AA Baseball), New Orleans Zurich Classic (PGA golf), Manchester Monarchs (AHL) and others. There are also numerous possibilities with collegiate and secondary education athletic programs.

The Bureau for Labor Statistics expects a 12 percent increase in employment for all educational administrators, including athletic directors. The Bureau also anticipates a 10-20 percent growth in sport-related and administrative managers’ positions over the next 10 years.

Students enrolled in the program will gain a sound background in administration and management. Topics that will be explored within the major include leadership for sports professionals, sports finance, legal issues of sport, event management, operations and facilities management, public relations, customer service, communications and marketing.

“We’ll provide students with an education using direct experience to enhance learning and skill development throughout the program,” according to Program Director and author of the program Diane Para, Ph.D. “Students will be able to bring the knowledge gained in the classroom to real work settings both on and off campus which will provide a more meaningful learning experience. This is one of the more exciting aspects of the program and we hope to take full advantage of all the applied learning opportunities out there.”

Para adds the bachelor’s degree will also be an excellent feeder program for high achieving students who wish to continue pursuing advanced degree programs, such as a master’s in sport management, an MBA, or a sports law degree.
