Alyssa M. Baker, ’15, is the recipient of a $1,500 scholarship from the
Syracuse Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

“Alyssa is an extremely dedicated person, hard worker, achieves high grades and sincerely cares about humanity,” said Paul D. Hitchman, a SUNY Canton instructional support associate and faculty adviser for the bridge team. “It is fitting that she is being recognized with this scholarship.”

Baker is a member of the SUNY Canton student steel bridge team, which competes annually against some of the most prestigious universities in the country to build a scale-model bridge. The contest challenges future engineers to display their skills in design, fabrication and team  work. They are judged on certain criteria including construction speed, lightness and economy. Baker and her teammates won the 2013 Upstate New York Student Conference Championships and finished in twenty-first place at the National Championships in Seattle.

Baker has earned Dean’s List honors for three semesters. After graduation in 2015, she plans to continue her studies and earn a master’s degree.

The Syracuse Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers was founded in 1923. The section represents a membership of approximately 500 civil engineers and engineering students in and around the Central New York area.
