SUNY Canton Students Recognize National Veterinary Technician Week

Students in SUNY Canton’s Veterinary Science Technology programs are recognizing Veterinary Technician Week from Oct. 13 to 19.

The weeklong celebration, sponsored by the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America and other organizations, seeks to elevate public awareness of the importance of veterinary nursing staff. Students who graduate from SUNY Canton’s two- or four-year Veterinary Science Technology are typically employed as animal nurses and work in the treatment area of a veterinary hospital. The week of recognition celebrates the tireless work they perform as advocates for animals and caretakers for hospitalized pets.

The Veterinary Science Technology program has been at SUNY Canton since 1978 and is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association. The mission of the Veterinary Science Technology program provides qualified students with the education and skills necessary to obtain licensure and seek employment as a veterinary technician. The program is a dynamic blend of instruction, extensive hands experience in small laboratory sections

The College’s four-year Veterinary Science Technology program compliments and builds off of the associate degree program. It is unique to the area, and one of approximately 20 programs in the nation. Both the two- and four-year programs run in tandem with the four-year Veterinary Services Management program.

Veterinary Technicians work throughout animal clinics and hospitals providing nursing care, patient assessment, and surgical assistance. Additionally, technicians work with a veterinarian as radiography technicians, dental hygienists, client communicators, educators, medical laboratory technicians, and often as hospital and practice managers.

The U.S. Congress voted to declare the third week of October National Veterinary Technician Week. The National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America is a nonprofit organization that represents and promotes the profession of Veterinary Technology, such as those started at SUNY Canton.
