Critically Acclaimed Writer to Visit SUNY Canton
Author Melissa Febos will discuss her memoir “Whip Smart” as part of SUNY Canton’s popular Living Writers Series.
Febos will speak at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, in the Richard W. Miller Campus Center’s Kingston Theater. The event is free and open to the public.
Since publishing her memoir, Febos has appeared on NPR’s “Fresh Air,” CNN’s “Dr. Drew” and “Anderson Cooper Live.” Her writing has been featured in The New York Times, The Huffington Post, Salon.com, Marie Claire and others. She has taught at SUNY Purchase, the Gotham Writers’ Workshop, The New School, Sarah Lawrence College, New York University and Utica College.
“On one level, “Whip Smart” is a page-turning romp through the gritty world of professional S&M and drug addiction, while on another it is a much more universal tale of a young woman’s search for identity, comfort and power,” said SUNY Canton Assistant Professor of English Phil K. LaMarche. “Written with striking honesty, impressive prose and intense emotional acuity, this book not only sheds light on some of the darker corners of our world, but on hidden parts of ourselves that so often go unexplored.”
Now in its second year, the series was created by LaMarche to correspond with his Living Writers Course. Students enrolled in the class read the books by the authors scheduled to visit the College.
Febos’ visit is the second of a three-part series this fall. The final guest, writer Chris Fink, will speak at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20. For more information, visit http://www.canton.edu/writers/.
