University Police Officer Honored for Life-Saving Tactics
The Police Benevolent Association of New York State Law Enforcement (PBA of NYS) has commended the work of SUNY Canton University Police Officer Seth A. Filiatrault following his life-saving intervention at an off-campus residence on November 30.
Filiatrault administered a presumably life-saving dose of Naxolone (also known as Narcan) to an unresponsive victim. Narcan is used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. The patient responded to the treatment, which allowed time for medical crews to arrive and provide transport to the hospital.
“Officer Filiatrault and his law enforcement colleagues are to be commended for their professionalism and rapid response, and for reversing a potentially tragic situation,” said PBA of NYS President Peter Barry, who is also the university police officers director.
The PBA of NYS executive director Dan De Federicis added, “State University Police officers were among the first to be trained and equipped with Narcan in New York. The PBA of NYS is proud to represent such professional and well-trained police officers.”
Among the other officers and agencies to assist with the intervention were St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s deputies, Canton Village Police Department and Canton Fire and Rescue.
SUNY Canton University police were among the very first officers trained to use Narcan in St. Lawrence County. University Police Officer John Hudson trained many of the officers from other area agencies on its use.
