SUNY Canton Celebrates Grand Reopening of the Cyber Café
SUNY Canton’s Cyber Café in the Southworth Library celebrated a grand reopening with a new look, more dining options and expanded hours.
New seating and soft lighting help establish a fresh atmosphere for the college’s premier coffee shop.
“We wanted to create a better space for students to eat and study in, and we wanted it to be open at night,” said SUNY Canton President Zvi Szafran during a ribbon-cutting ceremony. “In the future, we see this as a space where we can hold concerts and diversity events.”
Szafran said that State Senator Patricia A. “Patty” Ritchie helped the college secure a grant to pay for some of the upgrades.
The Cyber Café is open from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, and Cyber @Night is open 7 to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday.
In addition to offering Starbucks coffee and espresso beverages, the eatery now has a build-your-own panini sandwich station. The location also serves soup, quiche and signature salads made with fresh, locally-grown produce. The evening menu spotlights some street vendor favorites, including walking tacos, hot dog explosions, nachos and macaroni and cheese. Dessert and pastry options are available at any hour.
“The library is such a vibrant and active place,” said SUNY Canton Provost Douglas M. Scheidt. “This new space helps solidify it as one of the central locations for students on campus.”
The Cyber Café originally opened in 2004. It has primarily been staffed by Vicki Lavoie, a retail food associate with the College Association. Lavoie won the Employee Recognition award in 2010 for her welcoming demeanor and helpful attitude.
