SUNY Canton Steps Up to Support Puerto Rico

Students and staff delivered a truckload of emergency supplies to Syracuse on Monday in support of New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo’s Empire State Relief and Recovery Effort for Puerto Rico. Organizers said it was one of the largest donations from a single organization thus far.

In total, the campus drive collected:

190 flashlights
180 AA batteries
173 packages of baby wipes
136 hygiene products
98 AAA batteries
82 cases of water
71 boxes of diapers
36 D batteries
30 C batteries
11 gallons of water
4 9V batteries
1 camping lantern

The drive was led by Student Ambassador Maurizio M. Paniconi-Pagan from San Juan, in conjunction with the SUNY Canton International Programs Office. Many offices and student organizations contributed to the drive, including Brother 2 Brother, the men’s hockey team, Sigma Omega Epsilon sorority, the Greek Council and the One Hop Shop. Organizers said items are scheduled to ship to Puerto Rico Oct. 31.

“On behalf of the International Programs Office, I’d like to thank everyone who contributed and collected supplies for the donation drive,” said SUNY Canton Director of International Student Initiatives Erin E. Lassial. “And congratulations to Maurizio, who worked side-by-side with our other students from Puerto Rico, to spearhead this wonderful effort.”
