Corning Incorporated Foundation is helping SUNY Canton promote its science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs by contributing to the college’s annual Engineers Week and sponsoring a new student position at the college.
“We will be holding our second engineers week celebration in late February,” said Assistant Professor Lucas Craig Ph.D., who teaches in SUNY Canton’s Canino School of Engineering Technology. “One of the highlights of the event will be a engineering challenge designed for children grades 1 to 12. Corning has graciously sponsored the competition’s first place team with two $1,300 SUNY Canton scholarships.”
The entire event is designed to highlight programs in the college’s Canino School of Engineering Technology.
In an ongoing effort in support of STEM Scholars, Corning Incorporated Foundation also contributed the funding to create the college’s very first sponsored tutor position. The tutor is available to help students develop their career-building skills and provide academic assistance, according Johanna M. Lee, SUNY Canton’s director of Tutoring Services.
“This is the first partnership we’ve ever had to promote tutoring on campus,” Lee added. “Our tutor will work closely with a Corning Inc. representative to develop a list of skills that are directly related to employment after college, which helps us continue our career-driven mission.”
The college has already appointed Daniel B. Geisenhof, a Mechanical Engineering Technology major from Newark Valley, as its first Corning STEM tutor. Geisonhof helps students in any of the engineering technology programs. He was also one of the students who assisted SUNY Canton Instructor Neil M. Haney with the design and fabrication of a lumber-processing machine, which later led to the faculty member seeking a provisional patent application.
